Replaced the good old carpenters pencil I used for decades.
Replaced the good old carpenters pencil I used for decades. I've been a carpenter for 40+ yrs. Lead refill is great. Can go from broad tip for rough framing to a fine point for finish work. The little holster keeps it handy whether in pouch, pocket or belt. The long, narrow metal shaft is great when trying to scribe around tight areas and marking a point in a recessed hole. I keep 2 in my tool belt. 1 Red and 1 Grey lead. In my shop I keep one with yellow for marking up metal. The built in sharpener is so much faster than whipping out your Knife to create and edge on a wooden pencil. Especially if up on a ladder. If you are right handed and have it on that side. It's a one handed operation. The only downside for me has been the retractable mechanism fails. Some pencils never and some last a few months. But, overall I will keep using it. A plus is the bright red color when it falls into dirt or a pile of sawdust. Easy to spot.I've bought these for my guys and they end up buying there own.

Best carpenter mechanical pencil.
This mechanical pencil is superior! It is easy to sharpen on the case and fits in your tool bags or safety vest while not falling out. Best bang for your buck. I’ve tried many mechanical pencils before and this matte red color high performance mechanical pencil is a must have.

Best in the business.
Very convenient carpenter pencil. Worth $17 for sure. The holster has a built-in sharpener and a generally reliable pocket clip, and gives a tactile click when the pencil inserts. The pencil itself is very reliable. I like how thin I can make the graphite for finished carpentry or round it in the back of the sharpener for general purpose. It marks well on plywood, 2x4's - new and old growth, sheetrock, tongue-and-groove laminate, and even concrete.I also have a hultafors cylindrical graphite dispenser with gray, yellow and red refills. I'm assuming red and yellow are for metal and something else, but I don't really know. The gray works well enough for me, I haven't needed to find out.Two things to watch out for:One is the holster clip. I broke my first one dragging a tree branch and it snagged and fell out of my pocket. It was definitely user error but it failed nonetheless. The second is the holster will expand over time and the pencil won't click into place. My boss found that a wrap of gummed up duct tape around the shaft holds it snugly enough in the holster after that.

Better than Pica Dry @ Half the Price
If you love the Pica job site pencil, your wallet will love the Hultafors. Accepts standard lead. This pencil won’t roll around like others, since it’s flat. Just as good as competitors @ half the price. Highly recommend.

Nice, durable, expensive pencil, but colors pop on contrasting surfaces
I decided to get this one rather than a cheaper model because of durability concerns. I didn't want a pencil that suddenly couldn't hold the lead securely anymore. It has survived multiple drops. The sharpener in the holder is convenient, and works well, but might not be convenient for a lefty. The hard graphite holds a point well, but only shows up on lighter colored materials & wood. I got some Hultafors blue, green & white lead refills, and they really contrast with darker wood, like white on pressure treated. I use blue a lot, and only rarely use the graphite. I wonder whether cheap refills are worth trying. I find the colors can break when extended far from the metal support tube. While I sometimes change colors, I don't think I'd want to own multiple pencils.

My favorite construction pencil.
This is my favorite construction pencil. I bought a PICA at the same time to compare. The PICA works pretty well, but this is just better.

Probably the best pencil out there
im in the field doing the work, messing about. these pencils are great, i dont baby them, they get thrown around and dropped and they just keep going. the lead is so thick it hasnt just broken in the pencil like most mechanical pencils do. im impressed,a pricey pencil keeps it closer. extra thick, and can reach down into holes for marking, major plus. I will say there stock photo shows of 2. it is not, it is 1 pencil and its "sheath"sharpener? on it.misplaced? use the clip.which one? the red one.i wish they had other colors besides the usual pencils.... and they do.yes its worth it.
