Great workout, terrible company
I've had one of these for many years now, and use it regularly. Anything that promises to be all things to all people is probably overstating its case. But the Total Gym comes pretty close. There are a lot of exercise machines hyped on late night TV. Most of them are pretty worthless, but the Total Gym works, if you use it. There are still a few things you can do better without it, such as chin ups with a chin up bar, but for most things, you can do the exercise better on the Total Gym. Some of the exercises with the foot attachment are impossible at the highest level because the pulley would need to attach a few feet higher, and the ones where you sit sideways are awkward but certainly doable. Suffice to say that it's an overstatement to say that it's the ideal machine for those. But there are an extremely large number of exercises for which the design is perfect. The problem with most exercise routines is that people overdo it. They hear that "only 20 minutes" will get them in shape, but sooner or later, a day comes when they don't have time. The next thing you know, it's sitting in a closet and the return period has long since expired. People don't blame the product, but blame themselves. The Total Gym is versatile. One of the features mine included was John Carleo's six to eight minute a day workout. It's a lot easier to stick with that sort of routine and do so for years. If you miss a day, you can get right back into it. If you miss a few, back off resistance or repetitions and keep going. It's based on gradually increasing repetitions by one each week, and then raising the level and cutting the repetitions back to 8 when it gets to 14 reps. That way, the amount of time spent does not go up dramatically, and starting off at a low level is not a problem. If you stick with it long enough, you will need to buy a weight bar and some free weights, which go through holes in the bottom to give more resistance. Unfortunately, the weight bar has to be theirs. The problem I have with it is quality. The parts most subject to wear and tear are the wheels. I also had a few other minor problems. When I called the company, they refused to help me. They even went so far as to say they would not send me the parts listed in my manual even if I paid them. Why? Because I did not buy it using their website. They insisted that units sold on any other website but their own are unauthorized. Mine was purchased brand new and had their warranty statement and contact information in the factory sealed box.Over time, I ended up buying after market wheels on an auction website. The rest is holding up. I ended up getting different handles that find more comfortable which are ironically more cheaply made. There's nothing wrong with the stock ones, though. The pins that lock some of the attachments on got bent from regular use, but those can be purchased at a home supply store.I bought my Total Gym new at a good price that was far lower than the price they hype on TV. I don't think it's worth what they claim, and they license the name from another company that makes professional models for physical therapy. Incidentally, it was the effectiveness of other Total Gym models in a professional environment that got me interested in the first place. This might be cheaper, but it works on the same principal. Then again, you may be able to find one of the professional models cheaper.

I have had a total gym 3000 for years. ...
I have had a total gym 3000 for years. The issue with this machine is when adjusting the machine to a lower or higher level, the piece the you use to adjust the machine, the part that goes into the main tower, is not long enough to support the machine. There is a safety on and it holds but the little nub comes out of the track. When I addressed this issue years later with the company they said that there was nothing they could do. Has anyone else had this issue?

Good entry level equipment
OK, I bought a used total gym 3000 for 100.00 a year ago. I have used it on a regular basis ever since. The unit has gotten a little noiser, and is not nearly as easy to put away as they would have you believe. However, it *does* work you out well. It is easy to use, and effective. Maybe the body rail is better (it would be nice to have something wall mounted!) BUT - this is a review of the total gym 3000. I have lost weight, gained muscle and never hurt myself. Does everything it says it will do. Certainly not a ripoff IF you use it.
