For us at okuma fishing tackle, fishing is a life-long adventure. Collectively, none of us fish as often, catch as many, or are as consistently successful as we would like, and thankfully so. Fishing is not a destination; it's an endless pursuit that begins long before we ever get to the water. The anticipation of the next opportunity is as valuable as the time spent on the water. At okuma, we Craft the tools for the journey. From entry-level through expert, every rod and reel is constructed not only to execute, but also to excite, energize and exhilarate. From feeling the tap, tap, tap of a drift rig Searching its way along the bottom of a Steelhead stream, to turning a lifeless lead Jig into a fleeing bait-fish in the salt, every cast, crank, bobber down and hookup are the rich details of the journey.

Poor Quality and Customer Service from Okuma
This is the worst reel I’ve ever bought. I live in South Florida and fish saltwater often. I bought this reel for its gear ratio. A high speed reel is key to getting those big fish out of the reef quickly. Like other reviews you may have read, the gears gave way after only a few uses. There is nothing worse than gear failure when you’re on a pile of fish. I had a 10-15lb kingfish on the line and I felt the internals of the reel start clicking and grinding and eventually slipping when I tried to crank on the fish. Luckily I had the fish close to the boat when this happened. I sent the reel back to Okuma and they “fixed” it and sent it back to me. The same exact thing happened the next time I used the reel. Gears gave way on the first fish I had on the line. I sent it back to Okuma again noting my experience with this terrible reel. It’s been over a month and I haven’t heard from them or received a replacement or a different reel - totally ghosted. I wanted to wait before putting a review online but the reel itself and customer service has been unacceptable. Too bad, I was a good Okuma customer and purchased a number of their rods and reels but not anymore after my customer service experience.

Lost Fish.. Lost Money..
Do not buy this reel! I wish I read the reviews before purchasing three of these reels.. "stripped gears" "grinding noises" and the reel "locking up". Yes yes yes I'm experiencing all of the above and I've only had these for six weeks! I lost 6 fish on my last trip and now have lost $160 because two of these reels are only 8 days outside the return window. Okuma has a warranty if you're willing to spend more of you're precious time and money to ship, but even then another reviewer reported his replacement was broken even before putting it on the rod. Again, do not buy this reel! This is the first and last time I will ever buy an Okuma anything. Spend a few extra dollars on the Penn Battle II 5000 and you'll never be happier.

Don't Buy . Lots of issues.
Purchased this reel 3 years ago. Read the reviews, watched the on line videos & decided to give it a try. Have other Okuma freshwater reels that are great. This reel is a "NO" buy. After 1 year of use the smoothness went away & had to have it serviced. After each fishing trip I thoroughly rinsed the reel off w freshwater & stored inside.Had to have the internal gears replaced , the handle broke off while receiving a 10 lb. Striped bass.Okuma I am very disappointed with this reel. You have lost a customer.Buying Shimano or Diawa BG reel next time.

Best in price class.
solidly built and smooth as silk. I followed this purchase with a Penn Spinfisher V in the same class and seriously think I overspent on the Penn given the performance of the Okuma. I have landed flounder, spotted trout, redfish and snook with this real on abu garcia and St Croix graphite rods and the performance is flawless. I have since bought two widowed graphites in need of reels and just ordered two additional Trio-40S to complete my personal trio of Trios. These are hard to beat for price vs performance. The perfect ratio.***Update Oct 06***Still the best in its price class. They have held up like a high end reel costing a hundred plus. Just one note. Okuma as changed/updated the design much to my disappointment in the looks department; eliminating the carbon fiber looking graphite insert of the spool. I imagine this is a weight reducing measure. This exposes the stem since the gold aluminum spool skirt has cut-outs no longer blocked off by the insert. Just an fyi: be vigilant and rinse with fresh water and keep an eye out for corrosion; clean and oil the reel after several uses in salt water. The aluminum foot has been made solid without the cutout. I actually sent back a couple of reels thinking it was a manufacturing omission/defect only realizing the design change when I received the replacements. I lost several Penn Spinfisher V's in a bridge mishap and opted to replace those heavier costly reels with several more of these. Be warned, the pictures on Amazon are not up to date and still show the carbon fiber patterned spools.

Bad to the Bone!
Bought 2 of these 30s about 8 months ago and fished heavily with them for texas slam and even big uglies (black drum). Paired these with falcon 6'6" rods and 30 lb braid from kastking (awesome braid for cheap) with 15 lb seaguar fluorocarbon leader. Handles slot reds great, has tons of drag. Only recomendations are to get some CorosionX and spray inside reel about every dozen times fishing, and wash these things down well with fresh water after every use. Love these reels. Biggest fish caught on these 30s was a 48 lb/43" long black drum: handled like a champ. If i could buy again i might of got 40s for more line capacity.

Great reel!
I got a chance to use this over the weekend for the first time and loved it. Very smooth reel and a drag that is very strong, but also sensitive to small adjustments. Had a large catfish hit and had the drag set too high. Bent that pole good and I thought my 20# braided line might give up, but not a bit of line escaped the reel. Later, I had another catfish hit hard and start taking out line (properly adjusted drag this time) and everything worked well. Up next to the boat it ran again and started going toward the trolling motor. I tightened the drag a bit and turned it away from danger. Very happy with the performance.I was moving from reels with 3 ball bearings and a lot of plastic. The $20-$30 range of reels and this feels like a large step up in quality and performance. I highly recommend this reel.

Great Reel!!!!
I've been using this reel for several years in both fresh and saltwater, and it has performed flawlessly! Seasonal maintenance is all that is required to keep any reel in good shape, and this reel is no exception. Rinse it with fresh water each time it is used in saltwater to prevent potential corrosion. My reel has landed countless fish and has been put through it's paces. It has never let me down. It looks and performs just as good today as it did when I first bought it! It was worth every cent that I paid for it.

Bought this reel 4-5 years ago. It's spent it's entire life in salt water, and it's still smooth, smoother than my buddy's one year old penn. The 40 size is perfect for striper fishing holds plenty of line and has 20lbs of drag. I've compared this reel to my friends' much more expensive reels that aren't as heavy duty and they're not holding up as well.

nice looking reel, do bad on came broken and the other broke
I ordered two reels, and got them extremely quick. Tried both of them right away, but went putting line on the one reel I noticed the drag really loose. Casted out a few times a got a bite and was reeling in but the drag was still lose and would not tighten. Sending back for refund.Update: after another fishing trip the second reels broke. Don't buy these, it's a waste of money.

Ferrari without an engine
I bought this reel for salmon fishing in the Niagara river. After fighting 3 fish the anti reverse switch became very loose. This caused the gears to engage improperly, subsequently frying the reel. Thankfully this happened within the return period so I could get my money back. The drag is not very loud either. It was a decent reel when it worked, but that didn't last long.
