Q: does the swivel only turn partially or spin in a circular motion?

It does not spin. You can go up and down (like on a carrot) when peeling making it very fast.

Q: I need a vegetable peeler that is very strong. I want to be able to peel hard squashes. What pillar do you recommend that won't break.

I recently bought the Gorilla Swival Peeler and I love it. I think it would easily peel squash. I have no problem with sweet potatoes.

Pretty red tomato and potato peeler.

Great gadget for peeling.

I bought this item specifically for peeling cukes. It does a masterful job. The grip ergonomically comfortable. It felt like it gliding over the cuke. It was and is well worth the price. For those of you who hate peeling things, this item may just change your mind.
