Paint, not ink. Surprizingly.
Funny when I ordered this for my son I had read the previous reviews and was worried that when it came it would be dried out. My son had seen this kit is the Crayola store in Kansas City and was ready to buy it there but dad talked him into being a smart consumer and checking prices elsewhere. Amazon had a lower price so we went for it.The reason I said that the situation was humorous was instead of the kit coming dried out... it came way more wet than I expected. I opened it expecting to find it possibly dry, and the pads were more like sponges than ink pads. I guess I was expecting ink pads but they were more like wet paint on little sponges. They were however very wet.I am not sure if the company tried to compensate for the dry review from previous purchaser and added water to them before they shipped, or if this is how wet they usually come. but, that being said...I wished that they were ink pads instead of paint pads. They are paint pads on sponges. When you use paint instead of ink your finger prints end up more like blob than actual fingerprints with ridges. The coolness of the product is that you want to actually tell they are fingerprints.Sure you could put the paint on your finger. dab it off a few times until you get to the good print spot then make your real print, but then you are somewhat wasting the paint/product by making test prints until your print is right, plus a 6 or 7 year old is going to want to just start printing not dabbing and test printing. The paint ends up on the sides of your fingers if you press down, which is what the average boy is going to do, then each print even if dabbed ends up with a paint ridge ring around the outside of it.I guess I had high hopes for this product. and don't get me wrong he did make a whole battledroid army scene, vs the Gungans from episode 1 on our giant roll of butcher paper. But if it was ink pads I would not have had to supervise as much as I did with the paint.Good scores for encouraging boys to work with pencils and lines. He felt confident he was able to make these on his own even though he does have some trouble with fine motor like many little boys with writing.Sadly after that one use of me supervising so that paint would not end up where it shouldn't. The kit has not been used. He has not mentioned it, and I have not been excited to get it out. I think I will get some ink pads in similar colors and have him give it a go again. You could always save that step and get ink pads and look up ideas online as a guide. Great idea! but I feel the only way to save it is to switch to ink pads.

~ Fun, Imaginative Thumb Doodles Book, Do Check it Over Before Gifting. ~
We were excited to come across this Star Wars Thumb Doodles Book for our 7-year-old grand son who is very much into Star Wars this year. He was excited to get going on the thumb print art and was having a lot of fun doing it. Unfortunately, the accompanying art pen ended up being broken, which made us feel bad. His sister got a Thumb Doodle Book as well, but hers was intact. She was very kind and shared her pen and he can always use a different pen with it. Any old pen will work, but do be sure to check it out before gifting this to someone, as it's no fun to find a problem with your new gift. I threw the pen out and put a different one with his set so he won't be reminded of the disappointment and can just enjoy it for now on. So, overall, this is a fun Thumb Doodles Activity Book. Fun gift.

Highly recommended for your Star Wars fan!!
This was a hit for my sonโs 7th birthday! Weโve enjoyed many Klutz art/activity offerings with my daughter (9), however so many of these kits seem very girl oriented and I wanted to find something creative that would appeal to my son. I honestly wasnโt sure how it would go over with my budding Star Wars fan (would it be too irreverent?) but it was a huge success (even better - something brother and sister could enjoy doing together!!). Many battle scenes and epic works of art have ensued. Highly recommend this one!

Fun - just practice before putting thumbprints in the book
There is a learning curve with this book. My 10 year old son was happy with his end product but he was frustrated with it not being as easy as it looks. Just practice until you get it right then do it in the book. Overall fun for the price.

Awesome concept but seemed a bit flimsy
When this book first arrived I was a bit disappointed. I was giving it as part of a present for a little boy. The cover and paper seemed kind of flimsy for the price. It also wasn't very long. After taking some time to look through it I was impressed with the concept. The way the author shows you how to create Star Wars characters or scenes using your thumbprints and some pencils is super cute. I actually wished it wasn't a present so I could try it out. Although there is some places on each page to test out your artistry it's very limited. I'd suggest having some separate paper handy. I'd also think based on my own children's ages that a kindergartener or first grader would be able to enjoy this but probably need some assistance to work through it. I'd say by second grade they'd be able to do this activity without help.

Thin pages, fun ideas
This is a fun set with lots of ideas. The pages are a little thin so the art bleeds through pretty bad. That is why it is getting 4, not 5 stars. I like the easy to follow steps.

Great little drawing book for kids who love Star Wars!
My kids love these kind of drawing books. This one is great if your kids love Star Wars! My son loved the light saber colored pencil too. Actually one of the first things he used after opening all his Christmas presents.

Very cute book, keeps my son busy!
My son (and I) has just discovered finger print art at 7 years old, and he LOVES this book. It's nice to have the stamp pads stuck to the book with lids, so it's a grab and carry activity. The pages are really cute- they have examples of how to make the various characters and then space for the kid to make them, so it's part of the book. You can, of course, do it on separate paper, but I like that it's kind of like an artist's sketchbook, so we can keep it to look at his art later. I highly recommend! Just make sure you are near a sink and soap, and sometimes it takes a day and several washings for all of the stain to come out of your fingers.
