Syncopation with Extra Steps
If you ever practiced syncopation and thought 'this is easy baby stuff' look no further, this book adds many additional challenges. It has you memorize one pattern with three limbs while the fourth plays different syncopated melodies. On top of that It will have you sing the 1/4 note, than the 1/8th note, then the off beats, then the off beats of the 16th note. This is one of the best method books ive ever used

A LOT MORE RELEVANT THAN "THE CLASSICS"
THIS REVIEW IS FOR ROCK, POP, BLUES, FUNK, SOUL AND THE KIND DRUMMERS....NOT FOR JAZZ DRUMMERS OR DRUMMERS THAT LOVE EXTREMELY FAST AND INTRICATED, TECHNICAL STUFFI received this book yesterday among stick control and the chapin book...i have already syncopation and some more.Let me say that i never quite understood all the hustle about books that are for snare drum, or snare and bass. We are supposed to play drums guys!!, to play hi-hat, bass, cymbals, snare, toms...all as a unity, with music in mind. The relationship between the instruments commented above is the beauty of playing drums (if not why to bother right?).Yes, for that you must have an idea of how to hold and control a stick, and some rudiments wont hurt you.BUT,you can be proficent with the excercises in stick control and syncopation, and be an horrible drummer at the same time!!!INSTEAD, if you are proficent with the system developed by this incredible guy, no way you can be an horrible drummer!!!OUR INTRUMENT IS NOT THE SNARE, IS THE DRUM SET. OUR POURPOSE IS TO COMBINE THE SOUND OF DIFERENT INSTRUMENTS IN A MEANINGFULL WAY...I did just a few bars of combinations with the systems and the melodies...after 2 hours i could play some interesting things. You can feel how every excercise is training you to be a very well rounded drummer. The independence is worked a lot, but insomewhat indirect way (not for the sake of it)...and always in relation to a MELODY, or a rythm....THINGS MAKE SENSE FOR A DRUMMER!!The exercises don't leave you with the question....do i really need this?IF I COULD KEEP JUST ONE BOOK TO LEARN TO PLAY DRUMS, THIS WOULD BE IT, HANDS DOWN WITHOUT A SECOND OF HESITATION.THE OTHER BOOKS, AS I SEE IT, ARE A COMPLEMENT FOR THIS ONE, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.I guess if you were doubting about this book now you are not!!:)Cheers.

Requires at least two high-hats, focuses on site reading skills
It's important that purchasers realize the author's intent was for you to drum the way he did, with a high hat on the left and an additional high hat on the right, as well as some other modifications. Whether you agree with him or not that this "territorial" setup is better, you have to be willing to do so or this book can't be followed as intended. That's an important thing to know. Unfortunately I think makes this a "niche" book rather than a standard in musical instruction. The other thing is that this book really focuses on reading skills for the sake of reading skills. He sets up a few dozen "systems", which are rhythmic patterns, and then has you play multiple "melodies" over them. The melodies are sets of somewhat random combinations of time values which increase in complexity. For example starting off with quarter notes, then eighth, then sixteens, etc. Because they are random, it forces you to really develop and exercise your reading skills, but doesn't teach anything particularly stylistic. Now, there's much more to it than that, and of course if you commit yourself to it, then you will become a kick bu** technical drummer. So although I think the other 50 or so reviewers are absolutely right in giving this book a 5 or maybe 4, I gave it three stars for two main reasons. One is I really don't think the majority of folks are able to or willing to setup an extensive drum set like he used and it therefore de facto won't be used by a significant subset of intermediate to advanced drummers. The second reason for a three is that the "melodies" are really just site reading exercises. Now it may be that randomness is going to push you hardest to sight read and develop isolation accurately, but it's a personal opinion that the melodies could be so much better utilized, like to explore polyrhythm or expand knowledge of styles. Is it more than just isolation and sight reading? Of course. and the author's various methodologies and advice, like "singing" the parts and isolating the timing, will improve your chops like no other. But ultimately I don't think the exercises inherently contribute to musicality, just more to "musicianship". Now Gary Chester was a phenomenal studio musician, so if that's your gig then getting through this book will give you entry credentials into that club. Truly it will contribute to "musicianship" in the musical notation spirit of the word. And maybe the cost of the book is worth the audio interview you can download. But I just think the majority of drummers will start briefly through this book and put it aside. So maybe this rating of 3 is to warn the rest of us, who maybe are just level 3 drummers not up to the challenge, that this book may not be for us.

Beware! Audio Download is an Interview Only - No Drumming Audio AT ALL
I bought this book many years ago and now that I teach, I thought I would purchase it again since I saw "With On-Line Audio" in the title. Who expects an interview with a drum book? I'm sure 99% of drummers would expect drumming audio files when the the title says" With On-line Audio". Who are they fooling? I thought it would be nice to have audio files of the material in the book. Well, what a DISAPPOINTING surprise to find out that the "On-Line Audio" is an interview w/Gary Chester. It says it in the description but if you happen to miss it, you'll be disappointed so I want to make sure drummers know there are no drumming audio files at all. I would have returned the book but I gave it to a student instead. MD knows the book is hard and they know many drummers would buy it again for the audio of the systems and grooves in this book. Why don't they include some drumming audio files? Is that too difficult? Who needs to hear an old interview? Drummers want to hear the systems and grooves in the book.

Chop buster
You want a book that'll kick you in the teeth and leave you begging for more? This is your book. Don't buy this book unless you are obsessed with drumming like a teenage girl stalking her newest crush. New breed? More like old breed, like the men tough enough to stand against horrible tragedies in hope for a better tomorrow. Prepare your soul and buckle your seat belts, it's guna be a rocky ride.

A must have
I've had this book for many years now, I used it to learn to read and now use it to teach from. It is often one of the first books I go to in my library and it holds a lifetime of work if you are willing to put the time in, or a great resource to pick at occasionally. A must buy for any drummer!

Essential
this book is getting harder to find, but it's worth it - probably one of the most important books for learning modern drumming and limb independence
