This will play 4K Blu Ray. You just need the right software and hardware. But not reliable and is Japanese with no US support.
I do not recommend this product. It is possible to play 4K Blu Ray DVD's on this but you must have the proper hardware and software. Even with the proper hardware and software, this product is not reliable. I am sending mine back. It is a nice product according to its specifications but it just is not reliable. Here is what will work most of the time.1. Vantec NST-536S3-BK NexStar DX USB 3.0 External Enclosure for SATA Blu-Ray/CD/DVD Drive all black.2. Intel NUC NUC7i5BNK Core i5 or Intel NUC NUC7i7BNH or Intel NUC NUC7i7DNH1E. Note that of these three the NUC NUC7i7BNH has the best integrated graphics processor.3. Any Pioneer 4K Blu Ray player. There are at least 3 other Pioneer 4K Blu Ray players. LG has one or two. And, there are a couple others. I chose this one as it is supposed to handle scratched or damaged optical disks better.4. Windows 7,8,10 with the HVEC H.265 decoder. Fall Creators Edition for Windows 10 will work. Just run Windows Update and that should get your the HVEC H.265 decoder. I downloaded the HVEC H.265 decoder update directly using Google to search for it.5. A version of Cyberlink Power DVD that supports 4K Blu Ray playback. I know that Power DVD 17 Ultra and 18 Ultra support 4K Blu Ray playback. This player comes with Power DVD 14. I haven't tried that yet.Hope this helps.UPDATE: 06/08/2018.Don't buy this product. It is highly unreliable. The reliability is worse for 4K Blu Ray but also affects standard Blu Ray playback. There is no US Support. here is a Japanese site that may have a better driver and firmware update. I translated it using Google Chrome but the links are images with Japanese writing so it is near impossible to find a driver or firmware update if such updates exist. Sometimes the sound won't play. Sometimes the Blu Ray or 4K Blu Ray won't play. If I reinstall the Intel sound and graphics drivers for the Intel NUC I have this connected to it solves the problem. But it takes 2 reboots for the sound driver and one reboot for the graphics driver to get it to play video and/or sound. Sometimes it just stops playing in the middle of a movie. It gets worse if you watch consecutive movies. It gets hot and smells like hot plastic. I am returning this product. Again, this product is not listed on the US Pioneer support website. There is no firmware or driver support in the US. If you can read Japanese, then maybe you can find a driver and firmware update on the Pioneer website. It is listed on the Pioneer Japanese website.

which is superior to SGX
If you have an AMD system, which is 56% of the PC's out there, you can't use this. I have never in my many years of computing, seen a proprietary CD rom drive. Seriously? Only Intel? Maybe Pioneer can get their game together and get compatibility with SME/SEV, which is superior to SGX. What, does Pioneer have a back-room deal with Intel? Because leaving out a majority of the customer base is just plain stupid as a business model.
