Is there any way to integrate the X-Sense hub with Home Assistant?

Not that I have found - trying to get it to alert my phone with no luck

If detectors work without base station, then why would the base station exist at all? For those without smartphone and/or app?

That would be my guess. It would be a small group but provides access to both those who don’t use a smart phone or those who don’t want another app on their phone.

How can I bring these with me on the airplane? Will this 12 pieces lithium batteries be allowed in carry-on bag?

Call your airline and find out what you need to do to take them on the plane.

Will the app identify the unit detecting smoke?

Yes it will provide local notifications to your cell phone and can be tied in to an inexpensive monitoring service as well.
