Can you remove the inner spacer to have a picture directly on the glass?

There is no spacer to removed. You could easily place a picture on the glass.

What is the thickness of the of the glass/plexiglass?

It is not glass, it is plastic. It is not very thick. Not as thick as what you would find in a picture frame. I made a shadowbox gift for a friend, and realized, as she was opening the gift, that it was cracked. Very disappointed in that part of this item. It is also impeded in the frame and cannot be removed/replaced. I won't be buying this item again.

Can you put pictures inside? How many would you be able to place into there?

You put 4x6 picture inside. And the 4x6 shadow box frame can hold 5.63"L x 3.66"W x 1.2"H items.

Will this fit a graduation cap?

Our 8x8 white shadow box frame can hold 7.55"x7.55" items and inner depth of the frame is 1.2 inches.
