Does it just fold up when you want to bike or does it just stay in place?

it folds, its for loading/unloading your pet so the trailer stays stable if the bike isn't exactly level with the trailer wheels etc...

will it support a bike without kickstand from tipping over?

Yes. It is not big enough to make a difference for the bike. There is only one attachment point at the bike axial on one side. The bike goes over easy and bends the attachment. Better to get a kickstand for the bike.

Does this work with the burley nomad?

I don't think so. Check on the burley design web page. I believe the stand is an accessory for the pet wagon.
