Does this work on any brand/type of crayon, or only-as one reviewer stated-on Crayola brand standard size crayons?

It works on any brand of standard sized crayons. However, Crayola crayons tend to be less waxy and less crumbly than off brands. Lower quality crayons may not sharpen as well.It can jamb up easily. I find that not forcing the crayon into the sharpener helps. Also making sure that the bin that catches the shavings isn't too full. I run a daycare and sharpen hundreds of crayons at a time. There is a certain finesse to getting the crayons to sharpen without breaking off in the sharpener.

Do you have to peel the paper off the crayons?

I don't peel the paper and my sharpener works fine. You do need to hold the crayon tightly, maybe with two hands.

Does it work on the Jumbo Crayola Crayons used with younger children?

No, it only works with the small crayons. Standard size crayons. I use crayola, they fit perfectly; and with the sharpener they last forever.

Does this sharpener handle large crayons for preschoolers, or just regular size crayons?

Side note preschoolers should be using regular size crayons...
