The two bags I ordered has mainly flat slate with a few lumps... I used mine as a border in my garden and it has worked very well.

I would suggest 7to 8 bags. It depends how thick you want it. I would say 1 bag per square metre for a good covering.

Q: Would this work as a topping for indoor plants to help get tid of gnat flies?

I think the slate pieces would be too large for indoor use
