It’s one of the nicer mics every studio should have
The beauty of the 121 without the fear of frying it with phantom power. The backside has a nice brightness if you need a bit more higher end. It’s one of my prize mics up there amongst U87s, etc.

Royer R-122 = Total Class, Excellent Musicality, Wide Dynamic Range
Watch an in-field review by LANSKY: [...]I have been using these mics on pianos, cellos, violins, upright bass, percussion of all kinds, and brass/woodwind instruments with AWESOME results. Royer's R-122 makes everything sound beautiful. This mic is one of the reasons that professionally recorded electric & acoustic guitars sound so rich in tone. Two of these on a drum kit is instant bad*ss. I recommend the Royer R-122 for anyone that requires serious classic tone in their music recordings. In using this mic, people that hear my recordings believe I am a better engineer simply because of how nice everything sounds when all I have done is set up a R-122!If you are looking for a mic that will add a touch of beauty, smooth out some harshness, & improve the quality of your studio or live production, the Royer R-122 is an excellent choice. This mic is total class from its rugged iron housing & vintage look, to its distinct warm tone. The R-122 has a very natural sound that seems to gently round out higher frequencies without ever sounding dull or flat. This mic has a very wide dynamic range making it useful for just about any instrument & immediately improves the quality of production in any project. The R-122 is the world's first active ribbon mic that requires phantom power (+48V) to operate -- it has a built-in head amp that adds 14dB of gain as well as impedance-matching circuitry that allow it to be used with more preamps than traditional ribbon mics. The front side can handle up to 135dB without distorting & has a slightly darker tone than the brighter rear side. This mic takes EQ very gracefully without ever getting crunchy, harsh, or otherwise junky -- using a high shelving EQ will reveal really crisp detail that may not be immediately apparent. The only downside to this mic is that the ribbon element is VERY DELICATE & can be damaged by light wind pressure. If you are carrying this mic from one place to another, it is safest to put a sock on it or place the mic in its box before walking. The air pressure from walking with it can stretch/warp the ribbon element & will require repair. If the R-122 is placed in front of an instrument that is likely to produce bursts of air, i.e. kick drum or trumpet, it is best to place a pop filter in front to protect the element from wind damage. This is not a good mic for children as they will destroy it on the first session. If you can treat this baby right, it will give back wonderfully! This is a big league transducer that consistently performs with grace. I strongly recommend the Royer R-122 for professional engineers that need beautiful sound in any genre of music. Find out more from Royer at [...]
