all i knew was that it looked so cool and functional
i remember looking and ogling over this knife at my local sporting goods store when i was 12 and 13 years old. i knew nothing about skinning or hunting. all i knew was that it looked so cool and functional. this store was at cogdell's sporting goods in waco, texas; one of those hang outs for the well to do types. they never really looked at me seriously when i went in there, and i remember i was always intimidated by all the guns and the taxidermy kodiak bear right next to the display. i never even held this knife out of the display case because i was just a kid and not a rich guy and maybe it was not cool. so now as a retired guy with at least a credit card i bought my son-in-law one of these. he was in the navy, he is a very strong cross fit person and gym owner and he wants to get back into hunting. so now some 50 years later, i found a way to buy / own something from my young life that i remember vividly. i know this is a no frills hunting knife, and very old school; but hell, i am old school and old or older too, so i got him (and me) (l sneaked one in for me and just told my wife that is just how much they cost) a piece of nostalgia for him. but i really think maybe this present is mostly for me. does that mean i am selfish in my old age? i do love this knife!!! he tells me he likes his too. no serrated edge , just the basics. cool knife.

Great buy. Genuine Buck knife
This knife is a steal. I already had a Buck knife from Bucks custom shop and the quality was so extraordinary that when I saw these on Amazon thought they might be fake. But no. This is a genuine Buck knife. Sturdy as a rock and and sharp as a razor right out of the box. As a hunter and licensed fur bearer this knife is (in my opinion) the best skining knife on the market. It's shorter blade gives you better control than a 6 inch knife witch is vital when skinning an animal. The fat curved tip is perfect for the swiping motion needed to remove hides from flesh. I called Buck Knives customer support line and confirmed that all Buck Knives have a Lifetime Warranty even if you buy it from Amazon!

used on a hog
I bought the buck 103 and buck 113 ranger because I was looking for an American made skinning and gutting knife that would last a long time. The buck 103 and 113 come with the lifetime warranty and they both come with nice leather sheaths.A few days after these knives arrived I was able to try them out.I tested these 2 knives on a 300 pound pig. I used the 113 for gutting and making the initial cuts into the hide to start skinning. Both knives were hair shaving sharp right out of the box, I used the 103 to skin the entire pig without needing to hone or sharpen it. I was very impressed. I had to make a few passes on the honing steel with the 113 because I was doing most of the harder work with it. After a few passes on the steel it was sharp again. After skinning the entire pig with no problems I washed them off and checked to see how sharp they stayed. If anyone has ever skinned a pig you know how hard they are on knives. They made it through the entire job no problem but needed to be touched up before the next use.I went out to the garage and made a few passes on my wet stone with the 113 then made a few passes with the honing steel. With very little effort it was razor sharp again. The 103 took me a little work, I'm not an expert knife sharpener but I had a little trouble to get the 103 back to where it was right out of the box. I'm not sure if I was using the wrong angle or what but it took some work. In the end the 103 was just as sharp out of the box.I was very happy with this combo that is why I reviewed them both together. In case someone is looking for a nice hunting set up, I am glad I chose these 2 knives. I look forward to years of use out of them. The only negative thing I would say about either is the 103 was a little hard to sharpen but like I mentioned it could have been me not to knife. All in all they are both 5 star knives that i wouldn't hesitate to recommend to someone or buy them again.

Best first time knife for young hunter
Buck is what you want to hand over as a gift to a young person first time field knife. Back in the 70’s anyone who was anyone carried a buck of some sort. This knife I gave to my 10 year old grandson just before he shot his first deer a week later. Great looking knife and full of functionality.

Buck quality
I was surprised by the length of the handle. I felt for medium size hand it should have been longer.Everything else was "buck" perfect. As a meat cutter for 45 years I trust buck knives. Especially a company that honors GOD.
