I bought hand counters as a stocking stuffer per recommendation from Busy Toddler (busytoddler.com). I chose these for the color and only needing two for my 6 year old who loves to count and keep track of points. They have been a huge hit. He plays his own basketball and football games and keeps track of scores for team blue and team red with them. It is also helpful on car rides for making a game of keeping track of various items we see on the road. It has also helped him learn to read numbers in the hundreds and thousands. We are also using the counters to track data. Because he is 6, my son's life is apparently horrible because he "NEVER" gets to do what he wants. As an experiment, I suggested that he use his counters to take data on how many things during the day he has to do that he doesn't want to do versus the things he wants to do that he gets to do. So far, it's looking like odds are in his favor with the blue counter (don't want to do) at 6 and red counter (getting to do things I want) at 10. We'll see how the experiment goes. Anyhow, this might need an obvious gift for a child, but it has worked out well, and my son appears to enjoy them quite a bit. They have held up well for the first month post Christmas. It can be a little difficult for him to reset the counter by twisting the dial, but overall it works great.

Purchased these mechanical counters after using electronic counters. I like the mechanical feature so that the count does not change unless you physically push the actuator. Easy to use. Easy reset. Sturdy and does the job.

They seem to work fine, I don't know about the quality. They don't seem that they will last very long.

If you need to keep track by the numbers, this is your tool. I take physical therapy twice of week and I use mine to keep count during my exercises. Sometimes I'm told to do "three sets of 10." While I'm counting one to ten, I use the clicker (as I call it) to keep track of the number of sets. I just ordered ten of these units, from Amazon, of course, and I took them with me to PT and gave them to the staff to give to any patient who would like one to help him/her count. If they ask me for more, I know where to get them at a competitive price and outstanding delivery timing (most of what I order arrives the next day). Good show, Amazon.
