Does hook and hook side blade cut stems and is it sharpened (or sharpenable)?

yes, hook and hook side blade come sharpened, but can be resharpened if you don't like the type of edge they put on it.

Some say sharp & some say dull blade that needs sharpening (which is difficult) so which is it? Is it a question of batch lots or old & new versions?

Very dull blade, even after trying to put an edge on it twice. I don't know if I would call it a blade as much as a chunk of metal. Unusable.

If you've had to sharpen this brush axe, what kind did you get? This has been an exceptional tool but needs sharpening after 3 years of heavy use.

So far ( 2 years since I bought ) there is no need to sharpen. It's very sharp and dangerous. Caution while using it. Probably a good quality knife sharpener you can buy in Homedepot would work

No, it does not ! It comes with a plastic sheath that has a handle. You could probably fashion something to carry with a belt or try use the handle as a belt loop.
