Epic new world!
I really liked the first and now the second book of this series. The lore being created is different from what I've read before, and I love that its original. I can say as a Midwestern American, that the peek into London and its haunts has been thrilling. I want in that library! I absolutely love the build of Emma's character. I can't wait to read the next!

The phoenix revealed
DC Emma Bellamy, the only detective in the Supernatural Squad, continues to learn about her abilities and the population she patrols. The humans, however, seem hell bent on making the supes react. This second book in the series introduces more magic and deepens the relationship of Emma with Lucas, the top vampire.Enjoyable book.

Good
The second book in the series begins approximately a month after the end of the first.DC Emma Bellamy, is now a fully fledged detective, and she is in charge of supe squad. It’s a learning process, where she has to learn as she goes, but she’s determined to make sure that the supernatural beings in her area maintain the status quo. After another death, Emma finds herself involved with the vampires and werewolves again. This time she’s certain the perpetrator is human; which means they are *her* responsibility. As beautifully paced as the first book, we dive deeper into Emma’s world. She still doesn’t know why she doesn’t die, but she does find a clue during the book, and a few curious and almost helpful supes may lead to more answers.Part urban fantasy, part paranormal mystery, this book is sure to keep you both interested and engaged. It’s a fascinating world that Helen Harper has created, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my trips there so far!Recommended for those who enjoy paranormal mystery and urban fantasy books.

Fun read...
I didn't write a review for the first book, but I'll write it for this one. There was a good cat and mouse plot going on here in more ways than one. There is the chase between Emma and our main baddie, Nappy, the chase to establish Emma's place and understanding of the Supe Squad/ community, and the chase between her and Lukas. The back and forth between all these points kept the story interesting, without it, I don't think it would have worked well. There wasn't a but plot twist, like there would be in other stories, but it worked out because it kept the story fun but casual. Its not a true mystery novel, as much of the mystery is given to you at face value, but it works well as a potential paranormal romance action book. Its definitely worth a read for a fun supernatural weekend read.

Good!
The story is engaging, with well-developed characters and an intriguing plot. Emma's determination to do the right thing and help the supernatural world is admirable, and the banter between her and Lukas adds a delightful dynamic to the narrative. The reader is left eager to see how the potential relationship between the two characters unfolds, as well as to discover more about Emma's supernatural abilities and the adventures that lie ahead. The text effectively captures the reader's interest and leaves them anticipating the next installment in the series..

Urban fantasy mystery
I’m really enjoying this series. It’s half British police mystery and half urban fantasy and I like both genres. Emma is no nonsense and learning as she goes along. The writing is good and the plot is interesting. It isn’t graphic (sex or violence) or offensive. The book isn’t going to wow you with its brilliance, but it’s an incredibly enjoyable way to spend a few hours
