Do the 7 pairs collectively weigh the 5.79 lbs?

I weighed one bookend, and it weighed about 160 grams. That comes out to about 5 pounds for 7 pairs (14 bookends).

I want to use these for art, would paint adhere to these well?

My suspicion is that you will have to ‘toughen’ and chemically clean the surfaces for any type of paint to adhere.

Has anyone tried using these with LPs? I have a large record collection, but wonder if these are too small.

I think you'll be satisfied with them. They are a slight bit higher than half the LP size so unless you try putting just 2-3 LP's in between them they should be fine. The added bottom edge of 5 inches also helps, giving them better security and traction. Hope this helps.
