Checks all the boxes.
For every book I want to read on my Kindle, I've decided to read one that's been sitting out there for awhile, skipped over and unread. I don't want any of the books I've selected to feel unwanted. All of the Above was one of those that I'd ignored. I've read other titles by Shelly Pearsall and have always enjoyed them. Yes, I know they are middle grade books aimed at middle schoolers. But that has never stopped me from enjoying a good book.Mr. Collins struggles to spark some interest in math in his students. He comes up with the idea of constructing a tetrahedron (whatever that is, I had to look it up, so see I learned something already). The students feign disinterest at first. James Harris III is an artistic tough guy who puts himself in charge of color coordinating the triangular pieces. Marcel helps his father at his barbecue restaurant when he would rather be building the tetrahedron. Rhondell is quietly and systematically headed to college. And Sharice is the neglected foster child who sees the project as a safe warm, place to stay when the current foster mother locks her out of the house each night.Pearsall is a wonderful writer with diverse characters who have depth. Their stories are real. So if you're looking for a change of pace, don't shy away stories that are classified as middle grade or young adult. You may find a hidden gem and learn about something new. All of the Above checked all the boxes for me.

Entertaining; Solid Read For Middle School
The author employs an engaging and conversational style that will appeal to tween readers. The story's center--the construction of the tetrahedron--provides opportunities for metaphor along with being the major plot point. The book only suffers from a somewhat simplistic view of young people and their various challenges. I found myself frustrated by the quick turn in James's attitude, as well as Sharice's unrealistically upbeat personality in the face of terrible hardship. The plot moves (sometimes too) quickly for true reader satisfaction, but by the same token, never allows the reader to get bored.

Required reading for 7th Grade . . .
My son wasn't thrilled with this mandatory required summer reading selection for school. He didn't like the way it was broken down into separate stories, and had a hard time making the connections himself. However, as he explored the book with his class, the lessons beyond the surface started to make a difference to his opinion of the story. Ultimately, he finished the project with a greater understanding of the thought processes and interconnections at work within micro-cosmic groups and the macro-cosm of local communities. Now he is better able to abstract to apply the same concepts to the global community. It is a story about connections and how they move us all. I recommend this author for ages 10 and up - the messages in her work are universal and timeless.

I enjoyed the plot
I don't usually read books aimed for middle school aged children, however when my granddaughter had a required reading assignment of this book, I read it. I enjoyed the plot, the characters and the morel of the story and recommend it to young people. It was about a 3 hour read for me and worth knowing what schools deem important.

Great inspirational story about a middle school math project that brings a group of inner-city kids together.
Based on a true story, this book shows how focusing on something bigger than themselves helps a group of kids who are experiencing difficult things in their personal lives. They come together and involve and inspire their community.

Great read!
I purchase All of the Above from my son's required reading in his English class. It totally has his attention. He is not a strong reader but he really enjoys the content of this book and I find him preferring to read than watch tv. This is a major bonus for me (his mom). He can also relate to the characters in the story. I will read this myself and find related books since I finally found something he appreciates. Thanks Mrs. Rogers (my son's teacher) Excellent book!
