Can the screen function as primary monitor for quick troubleshooting without hooking up an actual monitor

Yes you can use as primary monitor. It’s literally a mini monitor. It has the following connections. USB C to power and mini hdmi to display. I didn’t get the cables and not sure if it comes with them or not. If you need to order get the following. USB C to USB A and mini HDMI to HDMI. That’s the only way to get the display to work

What software is needed I'm not understanding is it plug and play or you have to purchase software to use as a secondary monitor?

Can use the monitor free, no extra software needed, but if you want to buy extra made for screen display to further customize then you can by, you can create your own screen display for free, look up screen display jaytwocents on utube, with tell you how to setup different display.
