I bought this to avoid having to buy the replacement kits for my pets water fountain.Pros:-Value. I can cut about 18 filters from the 12"x23" sheet of foam(about $1ea). On top of buying the carbon filters in bulk ($1ea), it costs much less that the fountain replacement kits ($10 ea for 1 foam and 3 carbon filters).-Flair. I can get the foam in different colors, not that it matters, but it is nice.CONs:-Work. You have to cut your own filters. In my case though, I'm good for 18mo once done.Overall, highly recommended as it is an excellent value if you're willing to put in a tiny bit of work. For me it is about $60 per 18 months compared to about $200 for the replacement kits.

I like the custom size cut-ability and has good flow performance for this type of filter. Cleans out nicely and seems sturdy overall.

I'e purchased all three varieties of these filters to sort out sump filtration for my freshwater aquarium.They are all good options for filtration, but it's helpful to know the density of these foams and get the right ones for your application.The coarse foam is VERY open cell. It's a great option for pond applications or for initial filtration if you have a large aquarium with large fish, plants and notable debris. It will only provide minimal filtration for a common freshwater aquarium. The medium foam is a great choice for initial filtration in a smaller aquarium. The fine foam is a good all-around option for an aquarium and could replace the foam in many standard filters if you wanted to.We opted to use the medium foam as the first stage filter and the fine foam as the second stage filter before the polishing stage of our mechanical filtration setup.

Purchased for a vivarium build to cut to size. It's good foam, nice, and dense. Comes vacuum-packed and seems really misshapen but don't stress! Soak the foam in a tub of water for a few hours and it returns to its proper shape and size! I may purchase another block if needed.

No matter which filter we’re using, this is the ONLY stuff we put in the media chamber, (see Note 1) cutting the foam to fit. We don’t put in ceramic or pumice BioMedia. We don’t use charcoal (or Purigen) unless we need it to remove medication from the water. The cost savings with this method is huge, the maintenance becomes practically nil. This method is an adaptation of the Hamburg-Matten filter, which you can google for more information.To start the nitrification process, we use B001LULBXI Dr. Tim’s One and Only Live Nitrifying Bacteria , which is expensive, but damned-well worth it. (Make sure you buy the correct type of Nitrifying Bacteria, either for freshwater aquariums or for saltwater.) To maintain the filter, we rinse off the outside ONLY of these foam/sponge filters every few months or so to remove large particles that have collected. Do NOT squeeze the sponge, nor use any other chemicals that might damage/remove the beneficial bacteria colonies.This seller has other sizes of foam as well and I am purchasing some of those as well as we have been so satisfied with these.Note 1: If the water is cloudy with very fine particulates, we sometimes place a little polyester floss in front of the filter for a few hours. Or we just leave it there. For most types of cloudiness not caused by poor maintenance, the floss isn’t necessary.
