On the Road with Mallory Paperback – January 1, 2017

Mallory and her family are going to the Grand Canyon. Mallory's cousin Kate is coming too.I give this book 5 stars.

Soon it was going to be goodbye to Fern Falls when the family headed out on vacation to the Grand Canyon. Mallory Louise McDonald would be getting in the car on Wish Pond Road for a dream vacation! Not. It was going to be a dream come true until she found out that stuck-up cousin Kate was coming along. The were “completely different,” like night and day. Mallory and her best friend, Mary Ann, adored Fashion Fran and never missed an episode. “Mallory,” Kate pronounced, “watching TV makes your brain shrink.” Mallory’s brother, Max, wasn’t crazy about cousin Kate either because whenever she was around there was nothing but t-r-o-u-b-l-e!Mallory started writing in her Trip Journal about the trip that was no longer going to be all that fun. “Toenail painting,” Kate declared, “is a waste of time.” Seriously? Summer in Fern Falls, even without Mary Ann and Jennifer Chloe, was looking better all the time. Finally they were on the road with cousin Kate, who got out her tablet out and read, and read, and read, and read ... that is when she wasn’t reading to them. Fun Facts were fun, but not out loud. “What would you all have done,” Kate later asked, “if I hadn’t come on this trip?” Had fun, that’s what.The more the miles they logged, the worse it got. Max was right about the trouble because it wasn’t long before he told snoopy Kate to shut up. The crying and shouting had started a “family feud.” It was now “Kate vs. Mallory vs. Max” ... stuck in a car on a the world’s worst vacation ever. When they finally arrived at the Grand Canyon there was going to be even more trouble. When Mallory got ready to head down into the Canyon on Chowder, a mule, she began to scream. Was this vacation going to be the last of Mallory Louise McDonald? Would she ever begin to like that horrid cousin Kate after this one?Every now and then Mallory goes on a trip, a trip of course that doesn’t always go smoothly. My favorite is when Mallory and Mary Ann head to New York to see Fashion Fran in person. This one is more of a straightforward trip like the one she took to Washington, D.C. We are able to learn a lot of those Fun Facts through her Trip Journal and informative sidebars (à la Mallory style of course!). 5 star rating is from Ben. He loved that it was written as journal entries and also had pictures in with it. We had a good conversation about trust in relationships. It was a good book to read at the start of summer since we're looking forward to doing a small vacation. He now wants to have his own trip journal when we go.
