i need archival for photographs-- do these work?

I work at a museum as an assistant curator and we use All Stabilo Pencils for writing on the back of pictures and documents. You will need to write softly, don't push too hard.

Are they good for a layout sketch on stretched canvas ?

I have used the white one to sketch on black canvas with no problems.

Will this work on car surfaces with out damaging the paint ?p

Yes, it will work fine, as it's water soluble. Sign painters use Stabillo pencils to make layouts on vehicles and glass surfaces.

Are these fine enough to write on the edge of coins?

No these pencils would not work well for writing on the sides of coins.
