Do the rods adjust by sliding within each other, also, how is the adjusted length held in position?

Yes, the length is adjusted by sliding the smaller diameter rod inside of the larger rod.

The last time i ordered this it was $32. Why did the price go up so much?

Check with the seller or manufacturer. It should only be sold in the mid-twenties low thirties because of the quality.

Is the rod measured from finial point or the rod only? I am trying to figure which size to order. Window frame is 72"

It's the rod only. If you have a window that is 72 inches you would need a rod that expands at least to 78 Inches.
