Yellow Mountain Imports Chinese Chess (Xiangqi) Magnetic Travel Set (9.5 Inches)

This is a very good quality magnetic set. The surface is a metal printed surface that has the color of blond wood as shown in the picture. The pieces have very easy to recognize don't. The plastic of the board body itself is strong and sturdy. The dimensions of the board and the chess chips are exactly as they are on official bigger boards. And in my opinion this one has the best, easiest to read and to look at color scheme.One very excellent aspect of this set that can rally help any beginner is that the back side of the pieces doesn't have velcrow and is smooth. You can take a sticker of paper apply it on the back side and draw an outline of western chess pieces or whatever piece graphic you want. This is a suggestion only. I am not responsible if then you smear the surface of the board or do it wrong. But for me as someone who wants to teach their friends to play it is very helpful. It takes people awhile to get used to the Chinese characters for all the pieces. But with western chess outlines it will be intuitive.Note: the set doesn't come with instructions. But it would be stupid to expect it to come with thorough instructions on how to play when all of it is available online and on YouTube.

Really good quality for the price. The board is of the right size, and has a clean finish and a lock mechanism when you close it. The pieces are not fancy and you can tell that they are 'budget controlled' plastic pieces with a magnetic in each, but they have a great touch and feels good playing on the board. Would expect it to last for quite a while. Even comes with an instruction for those who want to learn. Again, not the best on the market, but for this price (i paid $8.60), it is a very decent set.

This is a really good chess set. It's just the right size for playing on a table or when travelling. The pieces are easy to read, and the plastic tube is a clever way of storing and keeping the pieces after they have been taken. The magnets work well. I read comments about them not being strong enough. But I disagree. I think they are the right strength. A quality set, with innovative features, and at a great price. Delivery was lighting fast. Buy this set with confidence.

The magnetic board is great for travel or home use. But the chess pieces are thin and light weight for the purpose of able to stay in place on the magnetic board, this means the pieces may not be durable and could be easily broken accidentally.

The set arrived in good packaging and as described. Compact, clean, straight, even, precise, handy, manageable, attractive. Although the box clearly reads "instructions on how to use," there are none. Rules are easily discoverable on the internet. If you want to get into the game, you will probably want a book or resource for opening moves and general strategy anyway, and those usually come with "instructions" on movement and capture. Reserving my regular set for live play with friends, I decided to get this set in order to study formal openings and other play. In my opinion, for what this is and presents itself as being, it is a great purchase.

This one is must nicer than it had a right to be at that price. The board is a perfect size. The pieces are gorgeous. The unit is solid and well-made. It could easily command a price twice what it's going for, and it would still be a great value.As has been pointed out, it does not come with instructions, nor does it claim to. An excellent book is Chinese Chess for Beginners.If you're just starting out, or if you want to play on the go, you won't find better than this little set. I can't recommend it highly enough.
