Classic Child’s Book
I bought this for my 7 and 5 year old grand kids. What a beautiful story! The illustrations are magical. It captured their attention and after reading it we looked up the date of the harvest moon and the hunter’s moon. I ordered another copy to put in my mom’s free library.

Favorite Fall book
This is one of our family’s favorite Fall books! So many of the author’s observations of the natural world reinforce what we see and experience during Fall while on our nature walks. My favorite line is on the second to last page, “sprinkling silver coins like a careless millionaire.”

Our favorite harvest moon book
Pretty sure we checked out or bought all the Harvest Moon books out there this year - this book is our favorite. It's written in a way that you need to reflect on the meaning - which is great for initiating conversations and teaching metaphors. Or you can just enjoy the lovely rhythm and rich words at bedtime.

Prayed to the harvest moon?? Didn't expect that.
Just a heads up to other parents/readers that are thinking this is just about nature and the changing of the seasons. While I am fully aware that there are religious groups that pray/prayed to the moon, I felt like the page about our distant ancestors focused on something more religious based, and I personally thought it was an unnecessary addition to what could have been a really great book. The book felt like it was for everyone until we got to that page, then it shifted to be about someone more specific. I was just bummed to see the book end that way. Other than that nod to religious history and practices, it's a great book!

Gorgeous book!
My children loved loved loved this story. We read it so many time throughout September and October and they were able to infer many excellent facts about the Harvest Moon. Very beautiful photos and aesthetically pleasing to listen to as well.

Beautifully written and illustrated
Beautifully illustrated and written. We read this specially for the harvest moon, yet my kids keep asking for it. My daughters particularly liked that the pilot in the book was a woman (goes along with see a woman doing that job, you believe you can too) and my son just loved that there was a plane in it.

“Ancestors prayed to” and “a gods eye”
It’s appears to be a beautiful book, the illustrations are well done and the I like much of the writing except for this page (see photo) which seems out of sync with the rest of the story and promotes ideas that don’t follow our families beliefs: things like moon worship and fear. The line reads “It connects us to our distant ancestors who prayed to the harvest moon, yet feared it might be a god’s one unblinking eye”. Uhhhh. Hm. Creepy. Other lines like “staining the earth and sky with a ghostly glow” are also a little ill placed in my opinion for a young children’s story. The Scarecrow, Kitten’s First Full Moon, or Mousekin’s Golden House might be better options if you feel similarly.

lovely pictures
the pictures are beautiful for children to look at but the text in the story is a little old fashion and hard for children especially of a young age to understand.
