Q: What's the Marcel balck top barrel for? I'm confused about that part.

You're talking about the black barrel? To my knowledge, that's just the handle? There's no tension in the handle, so you control the tightness of the metal part against your hair, that's why there's a handle and not a tab... I think. I'm more of a tomboy, I've been experimenting with this tool and honestly, that's the only thing I think it's for.Also, this tool is easy to burn yourself on, maybe it's just me.

Probably 1 inch. My hair is sliggtly below my shoulders and i bought the 1 1/4. I also purchased it for wavey/textured curls.

The handle spins but it does lock. The hot tool does an excellent job over all on my hair except for the locking of the handle.

Q: does this have auto shut off

Not that I know off, but I don't really know. I don't remember reading that in the instructions. Still, I never use it as it is too complicated for me.
