Scripturally Based
This book is a wonderfully comprehensive, scripturally-based reference on spiritual warfare. As Christians, we already have a victorious position over the enemy because of Jesus, but we must know what we are up against and how to take authority over it. This book helped me with that and is a game changer!

Light on Verification
There is a lot in Demons and warfare to like. It provides some good tips on living righteously and being prepared for the spiritual battles every Christian faces. However, my main problem with the book is that it reads a lot into scripture that just isn't there. In other words, it's his own personal opinions based on things scripture says, but the author really has to strain to make the connection. I've never seem someone try so hard to find a hidden meaning behind every word or sentence written in the Word. For example, a verse that says Demons roam the land is then taken to mean that they don't like water. I was intrigued by his interpretation of early creation how the earth "became" void, but I'm just not sure it stands up to scrutiny. If there was no light, how did the dinosaurs survive... or the plants they ate? We know light wasn't created until the first day, long after the author believes dinosaurs existed. This also doesn't explain other prehistoric animals alive today or those even mentioned in the bible. One of which is Leviathan, which the author believes is a demon. Again, this just doesn't stand up.Every description in the Bible of the Leviathan talks of a real creature, not a spiritual demon. Furthermore, Psalm 104, starting in vs. 25 says: "Here is the ocean, vast and wide, teeming with life of every kind... and Leviathan, which you made to play in the sea." Did God make demons to "play"? Going a couple verses further down, vs 31 says "The Lord takes pleasure in all he has made." We know God did not create demons. He created Angels, demons are corrupted angels. God created the Leviathan and takes pleasure in it. This is not a demon. Unfortunately the author spends several pages talking about the "spirit of Leviathan" and using it to talk about how it is used against us.The author suggests that the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was planted by Satan. I find no scriptural support for that and it seems to disagree with God giving us free will. If there is no other option, then free will is a myth. God had to provide the option for us to choose. There is one correlation made with Christians praying for God to bless our food when our hearts are not pure to tainted food making it's way into our homes and restaurants. I'm just not finding the correlation here. The author does a great job of using scripture to outline how to live a righteous life, unfortunately it is in contexts that just don't bear out. Using scripture to tell us to hold our tongue is great Christian doctrine. But there is simply no scriptural correlation between holding our tongue and defeating the "Spirit of Cain." So while the practical applications in this book is something every christian needs to read, the foundation used to write about those applications is flimsy at best. Too many times a scripture is used and a point is made but there really is no connection between the two other than in the authors imagination. But what's worse, is that when the author knows he cannot connect the dots, he says "the holy spirit revealed this to me." That just closes the door to any other interpretation or disagreement.

Highly questionable!
I acquired this book upon the recommendation of a friend who has her own television program, but was not pleased with its content, for the following reasons:First, it became immediately obvious that Phillips is a charismatic who believes that the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit are still extant today, and that God still speaks to individuals personally apart from the completed canon of Scripture. In this regard, Phillips relates his own experience on page 13, “I fell to my knees, and God’s Spirit spoke gently to my spirit. He said, ‘This is what you asked me for.’ “ In this post-apostolic era, when one hears what he believes to be the voice of God speaking to him, he ought to heed the admonition of Dr. Archibald Alexander, the first professor of Princeton Seminary, and a brilliant theologian, in his book, “Thoughts on Religious Experience”:“There is nothing more necessary than to distinguish carefully between true and false experiences in religion; to ‘try the spirits whether they are of God.’ And in making this discrimination, there is no other test but the infallible Word of God; let every thought, motive, impulse, and emotion be brought to this touchstone, ‘To the law and the testimony; if they speak not according to these, it is because there is no light in them.’ “We should not be ignorant of Satan’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11), but use discernment, recognizing that Satan operates primarily in the realm of religious experience, and often transforms himself into an “angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). As such, Satan may speak to individuals in a false religious experience, masquerading as the Holy Spirit, even giving what some have called “near death” experiences with “out of the body” sensations, including seeing a bright light at the end of a tunnel, and hearing what they perceive to be the voice of God speaking to them.Second, in this book Phillips posits the highly speculative “gap theory” which teaches that Satan’s fall occurred between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2, a view which appeals to the “old earth creationism” theory for support, while the Scriptures clearly teach “young earth creationism.” In this regard, see the “Answers in Genesis” article by Henry Morris titled “The Gap Theory—an Idea with Holes?”Third, in a book purportedly written on the subject of spiritual warfare, there are less than 20 pages devoted to a study of the Christian’s armor as set forth in Ephesians 6:10-20. This passage is vital to any study of this subject, and its exposition and application should occupy the bulk of any book written on the study of spiritual warfare. In conclusion, I do not recommend this book, but instead suggest to readers a better one by Pastor John MacArthur, Jr., titled “How to Meet the Enemy—Arming Yourself for Spiritual Warfare.” This book sets forth a balanced and Biblical approach to spiritual warfare, debunking many of the errors of the modern so-called “spiritual warfare” movement.

Like teaching a University hopeful how to read
I did not know this author prior to purchasing this book. I am going through a 7 year long struggle that has decreased my health and general ability to cope with most things in life. I have come to a place where I am alone on one side of the glass watching the world revolve with all it's citizens in it. I, sad to say, have gotten used to it. It is like a dull wound that even though it will not heal and it's pain has become mute, still gets infected for a long period of duration from time to time. And, in sin, I was trying to do it all alone. I purchased this book because I am aware that I am fully ignorant to what the battle of real spiritual warfare is. Without a doubt, this man was blessed by God to teach this ministry. You can tell that a person is led by God when they can actually help you in removing the plank from your eye by simply giving you the tools to make a spiritual sickness or infirmity removable. This book is no occult medicine man so don't expect instant healing in a book. It is simply put, leading the horse to the water. Whether you drink or not is absolutely a personal choice.
