Are the buttons on the side easy to push?

Yes they are very easy to push...I was concerned about the same thing when I ordered the cover

How big is the lip on the front of the case? Will it protect the screen face down?

It's not large but it does seem to protect when face down

is the back smooth? Would it work with a poppet?

yes, the back is smooth. What is a poppet? To my knowledge, it only works for a Samsung 7 edge

Can this case work with a tempered glass on the phone?

Yes. I have a case friendly tempered glass screen protector and it works beautifully
