This book is many things. It is an introduction to mechanics. It is an introduction to the complete family of Lego building pieces, including bricks and the various elements of the technics series (including pieces that may have evolved or been obsoleted). It is a source of ideas for projects. It is a great source of building techniques using Legos that will produce strong structures. One thing it is not is a recipe book of step-by-step designs like you would find in a Lego building set. No builder of Lego technics should be without this reference.

Very cool book that gives you a lot of ideas of things that you never thought you could possibly make with Lego technic. I think after building a lot of very large Lego technic models myself that this shows you separately how a lot of the internal components are built and work. Usually during the construction process you may not be thinking about the components that you are building to so it’s nice to see them separated in a way that you could produce yourself. Very cool book if you plan on building your own pieces. I think this would’ve been invaluable during my engineering school classes as it is a great introduction to all of the real life components that mechanical engineers use every day and design vehicles machines and other things found in every day life. In particular if you had wanted to build these during class he would’ve had to have access to a large set of components and a lot of metalworking equipment. this would’ve illuminated that necessity.

Great from start to finish
The author presents a well rounded encompassing approach to each subject. He provides a great balance of details and technical information along with some light physics but does not do it in such a manner as to lose you in it but instead it helps to provide a full view of the concepts and ideas. If you are starting out in the Technic world then this is the book for you. Do not get me wrong, if you have worked with Technic already this book can provide plenty of useful information, especially if vehicles are you focus. Hats off to a man that blends technical knowledge and concepts with a common sense approach to its presentation.

A fantastic book, highly recommended, with only one issue...
First, I want to say that this is a great book, each chapter is very detailed, Sariel knows his craft (check his YouTube channel). This book is a must have. Now, I'm removing one star because, let's be honest, the instructions are horrendous. And since most of the builds average 3 steps, that's a lot to say. The order used to assemble the parts is just not the easiest, you may have to hold all the pieces together for several steps until the last one where you finally put the piece that holds everything together. Or pieces that you've put in previous steps prevent you from inserting the next piece...At least two builds (automatic switching lights and servo-controlled valve) seem physically impossible when you try to build them. I had also issues with some of the more complex pneumatic builds that would simply not work (even though there are YouTube videos showing a working version of the model).Nevertheless, this book contains a lot of buildable models that illustrate all the topics, it is really enjoyable and informative. At the beginning, Sariel explains the best way to collect the parts needed for the builds, which can be a significant investment in time and money, but except for one type of motors (for one build) and the pneumatic parts, these are mostly standard LEGO parts, not outrageously expensive.

Worth upgrading to this edition
Sariel has show again his excellence in "show and tell" when it comes to dealing with the complex world of Lego Technic.I read this new edition with little sense of deja-vu, as it contains new chapters and the images are really better than the first version. If you are interested in understanding the Lego Technic world, beyond making the models in the box, this book is a must. And even when you do not feel like creating MOCs (My Own Creation), it will help you understand why your model is built the way it is.A solid reference for all Lego (Technic) enthusiasts.

Inspired my 12 yr old to make more complex builds
My 12 year old received this for Christmas 2016. I think he was a little overwhelmed with it at first, then came back to me later with the book and was marveling at some of the ideas in it. He was inspired to make more complex and adventurous builds. Mission accomplished. Highly recommend for Lego Technic enthusiasts.

An exceptionally beautiful treatise on mechanical engineering combined with applications of the science to Lego by a master Lego engineer. EVERYTHING you could want to know about Lego's vast array of Technic construction pieces, their uses, and their comparison to classic Lego bricks and pieces. Outstanding articulate and clear explanations, beautifully illustrated with high quality color photos and diagrams. Worth every cent and then some.

Worth every penny, one of my best purchases.
I'm extremely satisfied with this book.Very well produced, worth every penny.Graphics are great, but actual photos might been even better.I like the extra contents related to machines and mechanical elements. I wish there were more.I wish this book could come with all the parts used in it, as a set. Or at least, as an optional purchase. I'll buy at least two, I can't have enough technic pieces.I bought both editions, second edition is much better, I can't wait for the next edition.

Lego
This is an excellent book written by a master! Having bought it for myself, I promptly ordered another for my grandchildren. Sariel is well known on Youtube, and for me has produced the best reviews of Lego Technic. His review of the Bluetooth remote-controlled Lego 'Liebherr' massive digger goes into detail about using a smart phone as a remote control, using Lego's Control+ app. The best Lego book out there.

An enjoyable and interesting resource
This is a very good book for anyone interested in Lego Technic and basic mechanical principles. I enjoyed reading it and I learnt a few things along the way, although I would have liked the content to be more advanced in places. That said it's certainly a good resource and provides some good inspiration and techniques for your MOCs.The book is heavily illustrated throughout and both the print and paper quality are high.Unfortunately despite being a second edition I did notice numerous mistakes which I feel should have been found and corrected before this went to print. This edition is almost four years old now, so some newer Lego parts are absent as they hadn't been released at the time of writing.I expect a third edition will be released in the near future though which will bring the book up to date and hopefully address the errors in the text.I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this book to fellow fans, or to anyone considering it as a gift.

A fantastic engineering resource!
I own the first edition as well, and if that one was great, this is awesome! I would not even call this a Lego book, but rather a great resource of engineering, be that mechanical or electrical. The details go way beyond Lego as a toy, giving a budding engineer a real-life look at what Lego Technic really can be: a prototyping tool.

Impressively complete
I was very impressed with the completeness of the topics included. The text is well written and clear to understand. The content gets quite technical, particularly on gearing and differentials. Although technical in content and a fair bit of maths required to understand, having gone through the texts, the reader is left very well informed. A good buy if serious about building own designs.

Lego technic excellence
This is an excellent book with a sensible background of sound basic engineering. Where else can you find an Oldham’s coupling and a description of Ackerman steering. Recommended.
