Return of the Latter Rain: A Historical Review of Seventh-day Adventist History From 1844 through 1891

Every SDA should read
This is the most comprehensive history of the climate of the times leading up to, surrounding, and following the 1888 general conference session of Seventh Day Adventists, that has so determined the direction of the Seventh Day Adventist Church since, that I have ever come across. It has cleared up for me many of the questions that I have had concerning the churches administration’s stance on the topic of righteousness by faith as well as helped me to clarify some unique aspects of this beautiful doctrine for myself. This is a must read for every Seventh Day Adventist member wanting to obtain a clearer understanding of the church’s history surrounding one of the most important cross roads that we have faced.

Authoritatively sets the record straight
This book covers a crucial and controversial period in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Christian Church, involving the 1888 General Conference meetings in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as the 15 years or so of its aftermath. This period is often referred to simply as "1888". (This particular volume deals with events leading up through 1891. The forthcoming Volume 2 handles events after that time.)Sadly, much confusion and controversy remains regarding what happened during "1888". This is exacerbated by the publication of many poorly-researched books since that time, which paint the personalities and events of that period in a very different light than what the source materials actually substantiate. This book boldly and authoritatively sets the record straight, due in large part to its inclusion of copious quotations and footnotes to historical source materials, and due to how the book explicitly points out many of the ways in which other scholars have gone wrong in their conclusions, often through weak research, personal and political agendas, preconceived notions, and circular references. This book is a Must Read for any Adventist who is intentional about their faith, as well as anyone else who sincerely wants to understand the history of this Church. Don't make any judgment about "1888", and don't read any other book on the subject, until you've read this one!

A Beautiful & Inspiring Book
This book is beautiful and inspiring. In it is the tale of the 1888 Minneapolis Conference and what transpired thereafter. It demonstrated to myself that there is nothing new under the sun in regards to the attitude towards those who purpose to speak the truth. The enemy has his people and his plans but, thank the Lord Jesus Christ, He has his own people and His eternal plans. This is a very encouraging book and focuses the reader’s eyes towards Jesus Christ our Lord.

Wordy.
Disappointed. There is no other righteousness otherwise than righteousness by faith. This book hammers the point in a wandering way. Needs editing. Probably could cover the topic in a pamphlet.

A refreshing look
This is easily the best book I have ever read on this important topic and one of the most riveting books I have read, period. Duffield does an amazing and exhaustive job on a subject that needed to be revived, on many levels. I very much appreciate how he devotes the main body of the text to the historical data itself, and leaves any analysis and opinion to the footnotes - which one must read. Some are perhaps critical that Mr. Duffield is not a trained theologian or historian, implying that this disqualifies him to be an authority on the topic. But this could not be further from the truth. I am not sure that anyone has spent as much time as he in examining all the data. The book is easily on par with a PhD dissertation, while still retaining its page-turning intrigue. If you read one book this year, make it this one!

Get the book!
A friend suggested after prayer meeting that I read this book, telling me he was reading it (and showed me his copy) and said that he was finding it to be excellent. So I downloaded the Kindle version the very same day, which was last night. I must say, I am barely through the introduction and I am already finding this to be just what I need and what the church needs for this time. I'll give an updated review when I'm further along in the book. But from what I can tell at this point, every Adventist needs to read this book!

I have a much better clearer understanding of the 1888 movement and the characters ...
includes information, quotes that I didn't know and needed to know. I have a much better clearer understanding of the 1888 movement andthe characters themselves. Very grateful for the author's unbias research to give truth that will help us as we today wait for the latter rain.

Great source for all interesting in SDA Church History
What was really happening in 1888 in Minneapolis?Well, I heard quite a few versions of it but had not enough facts to make up my mind on one of the most fussy topics in Seven's day Adventist Church history..And this book happened to be almost like a gift from heaven for me.In fact, after reading this book I came up with whole different conclusions from what author proposes. So I admit the great value of this work and recommend it as an excellent source of information on the matter. Many thanks to author, I cannot wait for 2nd part of this work!

Amazing. Accurate. Above all, enlightening. Probably the best I've ever read about 1888 history.
This book is a must read in many senses. It gives an ordered, chronological account of the main facts about the history of the message and messengers of 1888. It offers matterial that is new, even for people studying this particular period of the history, as it is my case (for some 20 years now). It puts to shame more than one modern self-appointed "guide" to the study of this message and history. It is a delight to see the light shinning brightier than never before. Thanks a lot for this incredible amount of information, given in such a fresh and interesting way. Worth reading and re-reading. A real pleasure!Updated on May 2017: Now available in Spanish!
