More like Grade 3
I bought this for my son to be able to review what he learned in American History up through 6th Grade level. He has been attending school online for >5 years and is getting ready to test for entrance into high school. He is 12, but reads on a 11th grade level. Yes, he is advanced, so I expected this book to be a little lower level than what he is used to, but not this much lower... Honestly, he had equally comprehensive books in 3rd grade... The most disappointing aspect of this book is that much of it is pictures and vocabulary that is too simplistic in nature. The positive things I can say about it is the Constitution and Declaration of Independence at the back of the book. One thing that would improve this book is to have a workbook to go with it with quizzes to check for content retention. As is, I must go through and create my own.

Great for middle school or ESL high schoolers
I use this to help teach my English as a Second Language high school students as an add-on to their regular textbook. It has great summaries of history by decade or war with introductions to vocabulary and people they should know. The vocabulary on each page is written well, and there are a good amount of pictures. It would work well for middle school, or for high schoolers trying to catch up on their history knowledge. Several of my students liked it so much that they bought their own copy to refer to in class.

Great resource for ELLs
This textbook provides many visuals, simple language, and great summaries of key concepts. I use it with my 8th grade English Language Learners and it complements our 8th grade social studies texts very well. The students really like the book because it helps make the 8th grade curriculum accessible to them and they feel successful, even with their limited English language skills.

Great for low or non readers.
This book is very good for non/low readers. I also like the set up of the chapters, where at the end, a certain SS skill is taught.

This text is a good resource for bringing history to life with engaging features and leveled content. ESL students will benefit from this approach.
