Good choice
The problem is that there are only 2 books to choose from at this time (2011)to help you study for the PMHNP certification. The downside of this book is it is very flimsy. The paper is lightweight, kind of grey looking... I would expect for this price it would be of better quality (hence a lower rating). But don't let the appearance fool you. This book is likely all you need to review. All the information you need to pass the ANCC exam is in this book. I just passed the ANCC PMHNP exam. With hindsight, I can tell you that the content of the book, and the weighting of each section, is equivalent to the information in the exam.

Excellent study guide!
I used this book to study for ANCC's Family Psychiatric/Mental Health NP exam and it was so worth it! The book went over all the content material I encountered on the test and provided a good review. I tend to study only those things that I enjoy studying--so I often skip over nursing theory and legislation issues. The chapter on Child & Adolescent mental health was also great for me because I didn't get a ton of experience in my program with children, and this helped me know what to focus on. This book helped me feel so much more prepared. I passed! Yay!

Good for the exam.
This is probably one of the better resources that is out there because it will review what is on the exam. The downfall to this resource is you read the text and take the test so although you find where you are most weakest you will have to find your own way to summarize the text e.g you will make your own flashcards.

with ANCC no longer offering a review course for CNS's..
this is a better option than the former review course offered by ANCC. Is patterned more closely to the real exam. provides a test-taking experience which for some will be helpful. questions are more thoughtful and less obtuse than the exam but should cover the material in a way that will help with test-taking anxieties.

I like the summary at the beginning of each section
I like the summary at the beginning of each section. My only wish is that there were rationale for answers. I will let you know if it helped when I take and pass my boards!

Didn't help for ANCC exam
This book has great generalized information about Psychiatry.... but I did not feel it was the best help in preparing for the ANCC exam (PMHNP). It was written for nurses, generalists, and nurse practitioners. This proved to be overwhelming and with information I did not need for the ANCC exam. For example, there is an abundance of information about milieu's and managing them, not really a PMHNP role and not on the ANCC exam. I stopped reading this book after the 5th chapter, it wasn't worth continuing. My second complaint is that there is no rationale for the questions/answers. The questions didn't help if I didn't know why I was wrong or what they were looking for. I also found the questions to be based on general knowledge, not like ANCC questions. When studying for the ANCC, knowing question format/rational/application is just as important as knowing the material. For example, the ANCC likes questions with "inital action" and this books questions were not like that.In summary, a good book for psychaitric information, but not as a study guide for ANCC exam (as advertised on the front of this book)Note- I passed my exam, first attempt, but this book was of minimal help. The ANCC practice questions were expensive, but worth it.

Good reference for BC for RNs
Book is a good reference with lots of questions for Board Certification (BC) for RNs. However, for the Advanced NP level certification, it lacks sufficient amoun of material, but still can be used as additional resource to something else.
