This Edition Needed a Proofreader!
This new CreateSpace edition is a bother to read because of all the needless and foolish typos. It is possible for a skilled reader to read around the typos but they are distracting. The typos will probably serve to confuse younger, less skilled readers. English-teacher me read the book with pencil in hand to correct the lousy proofreading job. Why would someone ruin a valuable old book by putting out such a shoddy, compromised edition? Shame on the lazy editor. I suggest that potential buyers first try to find a used copy of an older edition, one from an era when authors and editors took pride in their work. The stories of the bears are very good. A fine teacher friend reads this to his students every year and they love it!

I loved this book as a child however
I loved this book as a child however, this version (I purchased the hardcover) had so many typos I only read the first 4 pages. I had to stop when the main character's name was misspelled. It was even directly below his name, spelled correctly, in the previous sentence. Extremely disappointed in this version. Buying from a different publisher.

Riddled with errors
This is obviously a cheap scan of an older text reformatted without any copy editing. It is riddled with typographical errors, such as 'though;' for 'thought', 'from' for 'farm', and 'rook' for 'nook', as if the scanner couldn't quite read whatever serif font the original was in. An entire paragraph from the beginning of Chapter Two was repeated at the top of Chapter Three. I HOPE that it was just extra and not replacing some other paragraph - Chapter Three reads okay after skipping it, but I have no way to be certain I'm not missing some of the original text. I'm only up to Chapter 4 so far- I don't dare give this to my kids to read themselves, since they don't yet have the experience to recognize a typo from a genuine Hoosierism or older turn of phrase. It's a shame, because this is a great story of early state settlement of Indiana, with many places named that we've personally visited. I'd like to have a copy that my boys can explore themselves and re-read as much as they like without confusion.

Don't buy this typo-laden edition!
The author, Charles Major, would be hugely embarrassed at the sloppy reproduction of his great little novel of frontier life. This edition is littered with typos (for example, Page 11, lines 5, 23, 27, 29) and repeated text (first paragraphs of chapters 2 and 3), possibly from scanning or rekeyboarding of text from an earlier edition. I bought this edition several years ago for grandchildren when they were too young to hear it and dug it out recently to send to them. Unfortunately, I see on the sample pages the same errors are still present in this edition today. So I bought the newer 2017 edition with the closeup of the bear's head on the cover and it does not repeat those production errors.

It represents a way of life long gone but I think children can still get absorbed in the book and enjoy it.
I purchased this for my Grandson, the reason being it was written by Charles Major who wrote about the area of Indiana I grew up in, At 73 years old when I was going to school Charles Major had a school named for him and all of us kids grew up playing and fishing on Blue River, Today in downtown Shelbyville, Indiana is a statue dedicated to him holding up 2 bear cubs .All in school read the book as well as his other one Uncle Tom Andy Bill. I took my children back to Indiana on a road trip many years ago to see where I grew up and purchased a copy of The bears of Blue River while there and read it to them on the trip home. It represents a way of life long gone but I think children can still get absorbed in the book and enjoy it.

Great story
My 8 yr old and I read this book for school. The entire family loved listening to the stories. Lots of adventure and a quick moving plot that really holds the kids attention. I also enjoyed the book as well. The only negative is there are a lot of errors in the book. I was reading it out loud to my son, so I corrected the errors as I read. This could be a problem if you were to have a child reading the book alone. I highly recommend this book.

Awesome Adventures for Kids!
Awesome Adventures for Kids! My forth grade teacher read this book to us a little at a time every week. Everybody got a small chocolate or regular milk and listened to our teacher read these captive adventures. I bought book to read to my son, and a second one for a friend and her daughter. Boys and girls will love!

Mariginal copy of this story but at least its available.
This is a very marginal copy of this story. Good hardback binding but lots of corners cut on production. No title written on the spine. No table of contents page and the book has several typos. The chapter titles are not listed in the header section of the page as is normal, just the name of the author and the title of the book. On the good side, this story is always out of print so it was nice to at least get a copy of it. The paper and hardback binding are of good quality and the delivery was quick.

Terrible copy
It's unfortunate that people are reviewing the story but not actually cracking open this copy of it before reviewing. There was a desperate need of proofreading. Whoever published this didn't even skim the first few pages to notice they were putting subtitles in all caps all throughout the pages - like what you would usually see under a picture depicting what you just read. Except, there's no picture and it's just a random sentence in all caps that you'd read a paragraph earlier just tossed in breaking up the page. It's our first time through this book and we didn't realize what was happening right away. It's made it very hard to read with my daughter.I honestly would pass on this copy and try to find one that is more polished. Definitely wasn't worth the money.
