Description This book argues that Morocco’s Andalusi identity is not a medieval legacy but rather a modern invention that emerged from the colonial encounter between Spain and Morocco in the 19th and 20th centuries, illustrating the alliances between Spanish fascists and Moroccan nationalists, Catholics and Muslims, and colonizing and colonized subjects and how colonialism and anticolonialism reinforced each other and reproduced each other’s logic. It distinguishes between the history of medieval al-Andalus and the meanings and uses that history has received in modern times, showing how the modern memory of al-Andalus is inseparable from the legacy of colonialism and is connected to Spanish fascists and Moroccan nationalists. It traces the genealogy of Morocco’s Andalusi identity by examining Spanish and Moroccan representations of al-Andalus from the beginning of the colonial period in 1859 to the period of Moroccan independence in 1956, exploring intersections between Spanish colonial culture and Moroccan national culture. Each chapter focuses on a figure, text, or concept illustrating a key moment in the Spanish and Moroccan negotiation of the cultural memory of al-Andalus: rhetorical uses of al-Andalus in Spanish writing from the period of the Spanish-Moroccan War of 1859-1860, focusing on Pedro Antonio de Alarcón’s Diary of a Witness of the War of Africa; the place of al-Andalus in modern Moroccan literary history, focusing on the work of Mufaddal Afaylal; the merging of the geohistorical concepts of al-Andalus, Andalucía, and Morocco; Francisco Franco’s sponsorship of the Moroccan hajj; the origins and political uses of the concept of Hispano-Arab culture; and the emergence of the Andalus-centric narrative in Moroccan historiography and scholarship at the end of the colonial period and the beginning of the independence period.
