Asperger Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums Second Edition

Very helpful in dealing with problem behaviors
My son's Resource Teacher recommended "Aspergers Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums, Rage, and Meltdowns" by Brenda Smith Myles and Jack Southwick. This has been an excellent book to read and I am thrilled that my son's "team" at school has also taken the time to read this! While my son technically has high functioning autism and not asperger syndrome, the information applies perfectly. There are many similarities between high functioning autistic people and those with asperger syndrome and the main difference in the diagnosis of the two is that there is no significant language delay with aspergers and there are more symptoms present with autism...This book is packed with information that will be helpful to those dealing with "difficult moments" that come with autism and aspergers. There are chapters on the "rage cycle" and how to recognize when it is coming and also information on self-calming and self-management strategies.I definetly recommend this book!

If my son had come with an instruction manual, this would be it.
This is, hands down, the most helpful, concise, and eye-opening book out there on the subject of dealing with "difficult moments." If my son had arrived in our home in a cardboard box on a bed of styrofoam packing peanuts, this would surely have been packed alongside him. Alas, he is a real person, so there were no instructions for dealing with the befuddling, frustrating, and unpredictable aspects of his meltdowns and rages. Happily, we have grown many years beyond all that, and largely with the help of this book. A must-read for parents, teachers, and psychologists.

I have recommended this book to several parents since then
When my son was 10 or 12, I bought the original version of this book when I was at my wits' end (15 years ago). The book contained very down to earth approaches to dealing with the tantrums BEFORE they occurred. It helped me to plan ahead to alleviate the anxieties that were the underlying cause of the tantrums and helped me to begin pinpointing triggers. The book also let me know whether some of the tactics I was already using were appropriate. I have recommended this book to several parents since then. Now I can't find the original book so I ordered this version. I wish I had the original book again. Although I don't remember exactly what the first version of the book was like, this revised version seems to be geared more to teachers than parents. It's still a good book, I just wish there were a shorter parent-oriented version! The first version was short enough that I could skim through it and glean what I needed very quickly.

A good book, but not what I expected from the title
When I read the title of this book I bought it immediately as I am struggling with my daughter's meltdowns and it seemed it might offer the answers I need. Unfortunately, I found little in here that I can use. There were some good parts that I can give to my family and friends to help them understand Asperger Syndrome a lot better though. If your child is school aged - and probably in high school - then you might find the information more helpful. It has great tips about identifying and tracking triggers, but I already do this and do it quite well. What I wanted were some strategies to stop the meltdowns when you can't remove or forget about the triggers and I don't think the book gave me enough of these.

Seems useful for understanding my angry son w/ HFA
Found it very useful in understanding and preparing for my DS's BIP / IEP meeting coming up. Though I haven't actually got to read it yet, given I loaned it out, I'd expect this would be a good companion book to Kari Dunn Buron's, "Incredible 5 Point Scale" book. This book of Brenda Smith Myles, is a good summary of that book's ideas and also of others that describe interventions of that nature.

A must have at home and schools...
This is a great book to help understand Asperger's, the characteristics, the stages and solutions. I also really appreciate the information to help both sides prepare for IEP meetings. Understanding the disorder, helps a person help the child effectively. Very easy read for parents and teachers. I recommend for all school libraries.

Informative and Brief
I found this book to describe my child. The author described a child I knew, but one teachers don't seem to understand. This book is more of a description and explanation of aspie kids, and giving the reader leads to methods that might help with the meltdowns and rages. Good book, but not the end of your research. This is a fairly quick and easy read, and could be useful for sharing with those needing to understand that traditional methods of discipline aren't going to work with these kids.
