can I reverse the fan after I install it as an exhaust fan?

The external louvers are hinged and only open when the fan is blowing OUT. If you were to reverse the fan the louvers would be sucked closed. Search for "gable fan", and look for the style where the fan is in a metal tube. With this style it would be easy to make a simple wooden box frame deep enough to allow you to mount the fan so it's blowing in instead of out. For the outside cover, look for "gable vent" with fixed louvers.

can this unit handle a carbon filter(canister type) or otherwise?

It is not designed for any type of filter addition.

Does it come with a thermostat?

No it does not. Amazon list one that is a thermostat and humidistat that is compatible with this unit. It just hooks to the unit by the hot wire as you would a switch. They work great together, we notice a significant drop in tempertures in the summer.
