Too Much to Pay for this "Pamphlet"
What a disappointment. This is more a pamphlet than a book, with large print, large empty margins, pictures that are more space fillers than informative and not even adequately described, and with all that "stretching", is still less than 100 pages. At $13.00, this is WAY too much to pay for what you get. The first words of the preface indicate that the book "... was written with the beginning collector in mind as well as the seasoned, veteran and returning collector." This publication may be ok for a quick overview for someone who has had little to no exposure to the hobby, but nothing new to a "seasoned, veteran or returning collector." In addition, most of the text relates to 1:64 scale models, which are essentially tiny Hot Wheel "toys", with only a passing reference to the larger, more common scales for actual die-cast model collectors including 1:43, 1:24 or 1:18. No reference to this very limited scope was included in the description of the book, which is a real error by omission, and is easily misleading. A quick search of the internet will provide much more valuable information as well as references to some very good magazines devoted to serious hobbyists. The only reason I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 is that the author did take the time to assemble the privately-published book, which does deserve some credit.

Too American for an international audience
I was looking on Kindle for some books on diecast cars and this came up. It has some interesting chapters on customising but overall it is too American-centric, not all of us have a handy Wal-mart to find the mentioned products. The author is aware of British diecast (Matchbox, Dinky and Corgi) but makes no mention of brands like Siku (German), Majorette (French), Norev (also French), Tekno (Danish) or Tomica (Japanese). I would have liked to have seen more on why people collect, a few reasons are explored but I wanted more depth. It is a quick read, I finished it in a day. I would have liked more illustrations too, there are some related to the customising process but I'd like to see more of the author's collection (which he tells us is 900 and counting)
