Backyard Bird Quilts: 18 Paper-Pieced Projects

easy instructions
Assorted birds and houses and they are different sizes. Author has project instructions for several quilts but all the patterns could be done up and made into your own creation. These patterns can help use up scraps too. I am going to use the birds and houses for table toppers to use. I can see spring time birds and especially holiday quilts.

Cool blocks but a lot of work
Some of the bird designs are tempting, although designs by Margaret Rolfe are easier to make. There might be one or two I actually make, but not soon. However, I am grateful that this book exists and I have a copy of it.

not what I expected
I love foundation paper piecing, and I bought this so I could have some bird blocks. What I wasn't expecting was the lack of spacing in the pieces. By this, I mean the block I need to print out has no quarter inch seam allowances included. It's the entire pattern as one big block, I need to cut it up very carefully, then apply a quarter inch seam allowance. Plus, the blocks to print are colored, not black and white. This will result in a lot of ink being used when I print them out, even in grayscale, which is not what I want at all. They're not on a disc, which makes this even more tedious because the curve of the book will warp the print. I don't recommend this book if the extra steps to make these work will be too much. I need to contact some of my digital artist friends to see if they can make a black and white version so as not to use as much ink.

Nice Patterns
Arrived as described. Packaged well and shipped fast. Patterns look like they won't be too difficult to make.

Stylized birds using paper piecing for quilts
I like the images. However, they look rather difficult to make.

very lifelike
This is a fun book and the birds are very life-like, not blocky like some other bird patterns. What a fun quilt it would be! My only quibble is sometimes the author uses two pieces where one would serve perfectly well, but some people like the multitude of tiny pieces look. I don't.

Nice book. Iโm glad I bought it
Some basic paper piecing knowledge would be beneficial to make using the book easier. I am glad I watched some tutorials before attempting these patterns. I donโt like written directions as much as watching a tutorial. The patterns I have used worked out nicely

Not for me
A lovely book for anyone who loves paper piecing. But after looking at this book I realised that I am more comfortable with machine applique. The sharp lines of the seams distract my eye from the picture. If you love paper piecing and birds this is the book for you. Clear instructions even for the beginner, if you want to give it a go this book explains every step.

Dated looking
I bought this because I love birds, and quilts, so I thought I was on to a winner. Sadly the book is quite uninspiring, in fact it is quite off putting. The fabrics and projects are pretty horrible. HOWEVER, the instructions seem OK (I haven't actually made anything yet), and I am sure the birds would look great in some more modern fabric.
