Interested in Making Makgeolli (or Know Someone That Does)? Get This Kit!!
I had been interested in making Makgeolli (or even just a rice wine) for a few years now and had been reviewing items saved in my Wish List when I ran across this kit to make Makgeolli again. I figured I would go ahead and give it a try, and now I'm kicking myself for not having done so sooner!!Seriously, if you have even the slightest interest (or know someone that does), take the plunge with this kit as it's incredibly hard to go wrong! One of the reasons I had held off is that I recalled my brother's beer-making hobby from years ago and all he had purchased for that brief venture (5-gallon jugs, vapor locks, various yeasts and brew mixes, filtered siphons, etc., etc.). Not so with this kit!!This simple kit contains literally everything you need to get started with this hobby, and it's so extremely easy! The 1/2 gallon jar, Korean Chapssal Rice, Nuruk (enzymes), yeast and water along with the instructions will get the brew started, and the fine mesh bag, funnel and no-rinse sanitizer will help you strain and bottle it in as little as 7-10 days later. And, the materials and ingredients are all top-quality! I'm closing in on about a dozen brews (many of them gallon-sized now) and the fine-mesh bag is still as good as new (and I ring the Jigemi, or leftover lees seriously hard to get every drop out of it I can). The silicone funnel is a great size that makes it easy to ladle the strained Makgeolli out of the bowl and into a bottle (I re-use 2 liter soda bottles for my batches), and the 1/2 gallon jar is a perfect size to get started with (like I did), as well as for use in brewing small batches or when experimenting with various recipes and ingredients (I've got a small batch going with some added crushed ginger root as I write this... I think it's going to be awesome). If you DO find that your first batch of Makgeolli didn't turn out for some reason, Hyesun House will gladly send you another pack of ingredients (Korean Chapssal Rice, Nuruk and Yeast) to try it again for only the cost of shipping. By the way, their web site is top-notch, too (not only in look/feel/navigation, but more importantly data, too). There you will not only find a shop where you can buy Ingredient Refill Packs as well as full Kits, but the FAQ, Resources and About pages contain VERY valuable information that will keep you studying for hours!I am soooo happy that I discovered this wonderful hobby through Hyesun House's "Make-Your-Own Makgeolli Kit"! If you have the slightest inclination, I think you will likely find it just as fun and rewarding as I have. I've thoroughly enjoyed every single batch of Makgeolli I've made so far, and they just keep getting better! Likewise, if you know of someone that has an interest in brewing, or Korean culture, cuisine, cooking or maybe even makes and ferments their own Kimchi (another thing I enjoy), this kit is sure to be a winner as a gift, hands down. :DThank you so much Hyesun House and Stephen for making an _EXCELLENT_ "Make-Your-Own Makgeolli Kit"!!

Excellent customer service
This was my first time making makgeolli. The directions were easy to follow and it ended up tasting great. My mom said it tastes more like the makgeolli she had growing up. I ordered a couple of refill packages, which unfortunately got lost in the mail. When I contacted them, Stephen promptly shipped me a replacement and even sent me an extra one with a hand written note. I definitely recommend.

Great Kit! Great fun!
Clear directions, quality items in the kit and, so far, everything went according to expectations.I'm an experienced home brewer and have tasted makgeolli a couple of times, including once in Korea, so I wanted to try making my own. This kit makes a "micro" sized batch--about 1 liter before dilution, 1.5 liters when ready to drink. But it is plenty big enough to experiment and try several servings of this authentic craft beverage. Also the makers of the kit offer a free refill of ingredients for making a second batch if you want to try making it with fruit or another variation. My only advice is to heed the suggestion to use a non-stick pot when cooking the rice--it is VERY sticky once cooked. As expected, it is a bit tangy when finished--like a tart green apple. I'm going to acquire some artificial sweetener to soften that tartness a bit as many of the commercial examples do.

EasyPeasy
We enjoyed everything about the kit. The box it arrived in was well organized and a piece of art in and of itself. The directions were witty and easy to follow. It was so successful we ordered a refill, which came promptly and well packed. Out hats are off (and our cups are out) to the fine folks at hyesyunhouse!

Easy DIY kit
Pretty simple and straightforward DIY kit. Would recommend placing a plate or pan under the jar for the first night because there will be a bit of overflow when the fermentation begins. Was inspired by the recipes and made a batch with rose petals and cardamom (add it when bottling along with some sugar) which turned out pretty good.

Easy and fun kit for getting into brewing Makgeolli!
I've made makgeolli once before using a different recipe but was pleased to come across a kit to make the whole process easier. I love the packaging design and branding and also love that the company shines a light on and helps the mental health issues in Korea. The kit comes with everything you need to make makgeolli except water and something to cook the rice in: Glass jar, chapssal (sweet glutinous rice), nuruk (Korean fermentation starter), yeast, no-rinse sanitizing solution, collapsible funnel, filter bag, and instructions. I followed the directions and used a rice cooker to steam the rice. Everything is prepackaged and labeled, so it's so simple to put together. Just rinse/soak the rice, cook and cool it, put it all in the jar with the nuruk, yeast, water and stir. Leave the lid unscrewed a little to let the gas escape. After stirring for a few days and letting it sit, strain, add water and sugar if desired, and enjoy!I've been recommending this set to my friends who like makgeolli or like to brew. Hyesun House also sells refill kits for when you need to replenish your jar!

Fun and easy to follow!
The kit came well packaged with easy to follow directions. I enjoyed making the batch and am excited to try the final product. I have made a few other homebrews for beer and seltzer and really enjoyed this as a micro brew because it was not as time consuming or as involved of a process. I would recommend this for anyone who is interested in homebrewing or making makgeolli regardless of experience.

Great way to start brewing makgeolli!
I tried makgeolli for the first time in Seoul last year and really liked it. I had a hard time finding it here in the US, so I decided to try brewing my own. This kit comes with everything you need, including simple instructions that make it easy to get started. Plus, the seller is responsive and great to work with.
