Audio With A G: Sounds of A Jersey Boy, The Music of Bob Gaudio

Bob Gaudio was more than his involvement with the Four Seasons, he was also responsible for their sound and turned out great music as a producer for others down the line. This collection skims the Four Seasons bigger early songs if only to accent the evolving work and contribution by Gaudio to not only R&R but also Sinatra, Nina Simone, Diana Ross and others. While there are other compilations that are more thorough to the Four Seasons catalog, I bought this for the original cast songs from Peggy Sue Got Married and the original Jersey Boys, plus the chance to hear tracks not usually collected together but for the unifier of Gaudio. Good transfers over the 2 cds - this one is worth it if you value the work of a producer.

In addition to many of the Four Seasons' biggest and best (which anyone buying this must already have) are some minor hits and cover versions that are hard or impossible to find on CD. I was glad to see the Gerry Polci-led "Down the Hall" on CD in particular. Cher, Diana Ross, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, and Roberta Flack all sound great. The U.S. non-hit but U,K. dance classic "The Night" is excellent. Lene Lovich's version is appropriately new-wave quirky. Also liked the latter-day (mid-80s) Temps cut "Deeper Than Love" and "Two Kinds of Fire" from the London cast of "Peggy Sue Got Married". There are several more highlights I didn't mention as there are really no weak tracks here. A fine compilation.

Best-known as a member of the 4 Seasons and writer of most of their hits, Gaudio also worked with other acts, beginning in the '50s with the Royal Teens ("Short Shorts"). He wrote an entire album for Frank Sinatra called "Watertown," (a few songs are here) and other performers. This is done in conjunction with the movie "Jersey Boys," the story of the 4 Seasons, but it stands alone as a tribute to the talent of Gaudio.

After seeing Jersey Boys in Vegas I was motivated by the story of Bob Gaudio to purchase this disc. The man is a genius and this is a great collection to catch up with his works. Growing up during those years I was unaware of all the great songs that he was behind. I really like this collection! Thank you Bob!

If you are a fan of The Four Seasons and Bob Gaudio, don't fight yourself over whether to buy this CD or not. BUY IT!! A wide breadth of Gaudio's work. The high point for me was discovering Sinatra's "Watertown" which was the first voice over recording Sinatra ever did. A project with Gaudio, that I heard Gaudio admit it being a "failure" I loved it and I would also recommend that if you can find a copy.

Really great collection of music from one of the industry's best. Bob Gaudio has done amazing things over his career - his work with Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons being at the top of that list. But this collection shows the versatility of the man and introduces many to the breadth of the work he has done with many, many stars. Well worth having in anyone's collection.

For most 4 Seasons fans you'll already have a fair share of their early hits, but Bob's writing doesn't stop there. Music by the Temptations, Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra and many more. This two CD set is a great addition to any collection.

Well, Bob Gaudio sure dod wite a ton of songs -- I like "Short Shorts" probably cuz I grew up in that era -- but in all honesty I think the non-4 Seasons stuff drags down the more well-known versions. I'd say buy the best of 4 Seaons (and save $$ too).

Interesting but I was more interested in having more music by Frankie Vallie and the 4 seasons so I was a little bit disappointed

舞台そして映画『ジャージー・ボーイズ』で、改めてスポットを浴びたというか、ある意味新たに“発見”された、フォー・シーズンズ、そしてフランキー・ヴァリ。この２枚組は、そのフォー・シーズンズの一員であり、長年のヴァリの盟友であり、何より優れたソングライター／プロデューサーとして、半世紀以上にわたって活躍を続けてきた男、ボブ・ゴーディオの作品集ともいうべきコンピレーションである。2014年７月発売ということで、明らかに映画『 ジャージー・ボーイズ 』（クリント・イーストウッド監督）の公開時期にタイミングをあわせた感じのリリースだが、これが実に、言葉を失いそうになるほどに素晴らしい作品集なのだ。２枚のCD、それぞれ収録時間を60分前後に抑えており、これまでの彼の仕事量から考えると、まさに厳選に厳選を重ねた、28曲・36トラックと言えるだろう。まだ15歳だった彼の初ヒットであり、この２枚組のプロデューサーでもあるチャールズ・アレクサンダー（Charles Alexander）氏による―英文だが難しくない―解説にもある通り、もしこの曲が売れていなかったら、彼の人生も、アメリカン・ポップスの歴史も、まったく違うものになっていたであろう“『タモリ倶楽部』のオープニング・テーマ”こと、ロイヤル・ティーンズの「ショート・ショーツ」に始まる、このアルバム。もちろん、フォー・シーズンズのナンバーは代表曲・レア曲取り混ぜたっぷり収められており、ヴァリのソロを含めると14曲と、全体の半分近くを占めているのだが、それだけではなく、リマスタリング作業にかなり力を入れたようで、たとえば「シェリー」でのパーカッションの音の立ち具合だとか、「愛はまぼろし」でのドラムスの響きだとか、とにかく「何もそこまで」と思ってしまうほど、全体的に音が良すぎる。ヴァリによるオリジナル版「太陽はもう輝かない」は未収録だが、日本でもヒットしたウォーカー・ブラザーズ版と、1996年発表のシェール版を収録。他にも「バイ・バイ・ベイビー」はフォー・シーズンズのオリジナルとベイ・シティ・ローラーズ版、「君の瞳に恋してる」はヴァリによるオリジナル、ナンシー・ウィルソン版、ボーイズ・タウン・ギャング版を収めるなど、それぞれに聴き比べを楽しむことができる。「悲しきラグ・ドール」のカップリング曲を取り上げてカヴァーし―日本でも―ヒットとなった、トレメローズの「サイレンス・イズ・ゴールデン」も収められている。フランク・シナトラ、ダイアナ・ロス、テンプテーションズ、ロバータ・フラック……といった、絢爛豪華としか言いようがない人々と仕事をし、ニーナ・シモン、ナンシー・ウィルソン、シェール……といった歌い手がその楽曲をカヴァーした、ボブ・ゴーディオ………そのキャリアの偉大さに、ふと想いをはせた。《 Track List 》【 Disc 1 】01. ボブ・ゴーディオのソングライター、プロデューサーとしての側面にスポットを当てたCD。映画「ジャージーボーイズ」にあやかって出て来たような企画だがFシナトラやダイアナ・ロスなどに楽曲を提供している。シナトラやニール・ダイヤモンドなどのアルバムをプロデュースしたごともあり、かつモータウン系のアーティストに強い近親感を抱いている様子がわかる。自身もフォーシーズンズとしてモータウン系のモーウエストと言うレーベルにいたことがある。ただしそのへんの事情を知っていないと楽しめないかも知れない。オマケ？として『ショートショーツ』（例のあれ！ですね）が入ってます。
