Ok
I bought this for Brazil nuts after reading the rave reviews. I eat all kinds of in shell nuts. I think I will break this review down in to nut types. I will start with the ones this performs well with and end with the ones it is bad at.Walnuts. 5 stars. Opens them easily. Nut is easy to extract from shell. Catches most all of the waste.Pecans. 5 stars. Performance same as Walnuts.Filberts. 5 stars. Although small. This cracks them easily no waste. No mess.Almonds. 3 stars. The best way I have found to crack these is to hold them up against the top lip outside of the cup. It opens them. Although 99% of the time they need a lot of work from your fingers afterwards. Waste catching feature useless here.Brazil Nuts. 1 star. They will not fit in it anyway that doesn't mangle them. I have gotten one to open without wasting any of the nut. A hammer is way better than this. It's also very messy. Once the cracker mangles the nut you have to take it out and pull all the pieces of shell off and try to get what nut you can. A hammer actually makes less of a mess. That said. It is very well made. I see it lasting a lifetime. And depending what kind of nuts you want to use it for it may be perfect for you.

A great improvement over the traditional nut crackers.
Cracks the shells gently. No more smashed nuts or pinched fingers. Keeps the shards from scattering on the floor. Longer handles are easier for weak hands.Sometimes need to rotate the nut and crack the other half as well.Just be sure to never force it open.

Three Stars
sturdy; but, awkward and not nearly as effective as the old fashioned nut cracker we're all used to..

Not great for pecans
This might be good for other kinds of nuts, but I bought this for pecans. It does not work very well for pecans.

Best Nutcracker I've ever tried (hazelnuts)
I've only used it for hazelnuts so far but it certainly excels at those. Effortless cracking and no more shells flying everywhere.

Excellent product. Works perfectly with large nuts like walnuts. Smaller nuts not recommended.

Priitttty good.
For cracking European walnuts (which have stronger shells and can be smaller than Californian or Chinese ones), it is ace. Not the best ever but ace.And it will crack hazelnuts too, but only if you have giant hazelnuts. Perhaps they have them in America. On the whole though I agree with Mr Jost's review - a hammer is better at cracking once you learn how to hit your nuts with it. And a French leather surfaced walnut mallet is better still (3 euros from a vide grenier). But who wants walnut shells all over the kitchen?

Stylish but not as practical as it could be.
The nutcracker is not very practical as it accomodates really small nuts or very big nuts. Anything in between (large hazelnuts) can't be opened. Not very practical!

Fehlkauf
