No Complaints Here - A really Lovely Sticky Flavoursome Rice!
I have to say I am I impressed with the flavour, texture and taste of this rice. I stir-fried some chicken with onion added some chilli and garlic sauce with spring onions while preparing the rice. I found the prepping a bit faffy (although the instruction are clear and easy to follow) there are few steps - you have to rinse it 3 times then leave it to soak for half an hour then rinse completely. To a saucepan you add the rice – 170ml of water and the included sachet of seasoning (I did forget the soya sauce so just added it at the end) – the bamboo shoots and carrots sachet is then added to the top of the rice and not to be mixed. On medium heat, you bring the pot to boil then simmer on a low heat with the lid on for about 12 minutes and not open the lid then switch the heat off and let the mixture rest still with the lid on.My chicken stir fry waited patiently for the rice to be ready but it was worth waiting for - really divine, light and flavoursome but it was slightly sticky which is how I love my rice so if you’re looking for a fluffy texture this is not it.This kit served my hubby and I both a big portion of rice with stirfry and he asked when we were having it again – it really was that nice. I would recommend. Includes the bag of 150g rice, the sachet of soya sauce and the sachet of drained bamboo shoots & carrot pieces.

Delicious but expensive!
This meal kit makes for a lovely dinner. Inside the box you get the rice, the seasoning and the veggies. The instructions are clear and if you follow it you will end up with 2 portion of delicious Japanese style rice. However when you think about the price and what you get I can't help but feel ripped off. £4 for 2 portions of rice...it's a lovely rice but still. I'd like to think I'm quite experienced in the kitchen and if I work it out, you get a handful of short grain rice, the seasoning which is basically soy sauce and mirin and some carrot shavings and bamboo shoots. If you were to go to the supermarket and buy these ingredients separately you'd pay a lot less than £4. And it's not even that quick meal, you need to rinse the rice, then soak it for half an hour, bring it to boil and let it simmer for another 12 minutes. I know a lot of people who wouldn't call this a quick meal. I personally find it absolutely fine, but this kit doesn't save you time as you could easily chop the carrot and bamboo and make the sauce whilst the rice is soaking. So I just don't see the point of buying this kit as it doesn't make your life that much easier. Once you learn this recipe you can just buy the ingredients and save money. I have a feeling that the vegan word on the package is there to justify the price. These days everybody tries to sell vegan stuff and charge silly money for it. If this pack would cost half the price than I could say 4 or even 5 stars as it really is delicious though.

It's not bad, and if not used to good quality bamboo taste this before adding
First of all I must say that I don't think this is worth the price it's on Amazon for. It's a bag of rice enough just for two, some boiled veg and a small liquid sachet, that's it. This is a pretty starchy, glutinous rice, so you really should follow the washing steps especially, and the soaking step is recommended too. You're meant to then bring the rice to a boil and add all the ingredients. I added the liquid sachet but held off on the carrot and bamboo as I didn't want it to be mush. If you've never cooked rice in a Japanese way then this process may be confusing, but if followed correctly you shouldn't get any sticking to the pan or burning. Just keep it on a very low heat and if your hob won't allow it you can cycle it on and off, or lift the pan to keep it at a low but bubbling heat. The end result it a sticky rice with a nice flavour from the liquid sachet. The bamboo tastes just like the fresh bamboo I had in Japan – it's nothing like the stuff you get in tins over here or in a Chinese takeaway. It's good quality bamboo, which means it's got a unique texture and flavour, which I personally find a bit too musty, so before adding it to this I'd recommend giving it a taste on its own first as it will permeate through the rice. It's perfectly pleasant rice, but the end result really can be achieved with easy to buy ingredients which will last longer than a single meal.

Not just for vegans
This vegan Japanese rice kit has a tasty delicate flavour of soy sauce, is fairly simple to prepare and goes well paired with meat dishes, so not just for vegans.I followed the instructions of rinsing the rice thoroughly 2-3 times and soaking for 15 minutes before adding to a pan with 170ml of cold water and the sachet of flavour along with the carrot and bamboo placed on top. I brought it to a boil and simmered on low for 12 minutes with the lid kept on, took it off the heat and let sit for 10 minutes with the lid kept on before serving as an accompaniment to teriyaki chicken kebabs and 7 spice japanese seasoned chips. All the flavours went so well together and easily served 2.If you are vegan you could pair this with tofu or other veggies which would taste just as good or just eat it as it comes. The rice has a nice sticky consistency once cooked and 1 packet makes 2 portions. If you find my review helpful then please click 👇the helpful vote button below. Thank you 😊

Slightly Bitter to Taste
Firstly, it is a pre-packed, pre-prepared type of meal, so expecting a good restaurant quality would be unwise, but still, I just can't shake off the feeling it lacks in something. It just has that aftertaste of packaged food that you get with Sainsbury's tikka masalas & similar. Nothing can substitute freshly cooked food, so there should be no illusions in regards to this. As a 'food-from-a-box', this rice is quite different from pre-cooked meals you usually find on the shelves in the shops. The carrots/bamboo shoots come in a liquid that you should dispose of before adding them to rice. Very sound advice on the box regarding setting the rice in water before cooking. The rise resembles risotto rice in shape & texture. The ready meal is slightly viscous. If you prefer rice that is dry you might not like this dish as it definitely is more porridge-like. But I guess you won't find a pre-cooked meal that would not end up in a state of porridge to some extent. And, if I understood correctly, the rice comes raw not pre-cooked.
