So far, so good but appalling delivery
This thermometer is very convenient to use and, being contactless, shouldn't require cleaning. I cannot judge the accuracy but the values it gives seem realistic. I had to use metal-cutting shears to release it from the packaging. Delivery was appalling: I received an email to say it was delivered and handed to the resident. It was neither delivered nor handed to the resident. The following day it was "delivered" - nowhere near my house, just left in the rain close to my road!

Seems a good unit, spoilt by horrible packaging and perhaps not best value
This type of thermometer is super-handy for measuring temperature instantly and with no fuss. Just point it at the target, squeeze the trigger, and read the display. Hold is automatic, so the number remains on the display. The temperature is measured by an infrared beam. Use of the laser is optional, and when enabled, shines a visible dot on the surface you are pointing it, the idea being to show exactly where you are measuring. This unit has a distance to spot ratio of 6:1 which means that if you are 12cm away from the target, for example, it will measure the spot with a radius of 2cm where you are pointing. The primary purpose of this thermometer is for cooking. How hot is your pizza oven? How hot is the fat in your fryer? This will tell you immediately and safely, without any mess, since it is non-contact. The downside is that it only measures external temperature, so you will still need a meat thermometer if you want to know what is happening inside your joint. It could be handy elsewhere too, for example in plumbing or electronics. Is the Taylor a good one to get though? It depends how much you pay of course, but there are a few things to consider. The distance to spot ratio is not that good; it is easy to find units with 10:1 or 12:1, some of which are cheaper at current prices. The max temperature on this one is 400° C or 752° F; fine for me but again, it is easy to find others which measure higher temperatures. What you care most about is accuracy of course; I’m not able to verify this but the claim is about +/- 1°C or +/- 1.5% at temperatures above 65° C.I greatly disliked the blister packaging which is hard to open and once cut, with sharp edges that can cut you. I also dislike the lack of instructions and the fact that batteries (2 x AAA) are not included. Battery life appears to be about 16 hrs. I am basing these figures on specifications for the Taylor 9523 which looks identical, though the actual unit reviewed is sold by Kitchencraft as the Taylor Pro Digital Non-Contact Thermometer. On the plus side, there is a 5 year warranty which is decent.

Amazingly accurate...
The very first test I did with this was with my fridge / freezer. A fridge should range from 3c to 5c and this gadget recorded mine at 3.2c and quickly rising to over 4c as the fridge door was open. It's common knowledge that leaving a fridge door open is not good as it lets warm air in but I didn't realise how fast the temperature changes. As for the freezer, a recording of -18c is excellent. My fridge / freezer is coming up towards six years old now so I am already planning to replace it within the next year or two. However, this gadget has shown that my fridge / freezer is still doing an excellent job at moderating the temperatures. This "infrared thermometer" can have many, many uses both in the kitchen and other parts of the home. It can be used to discover cold spots so remedial action can be taken to make the home more efficient. It can receord the temperatures of doors and walls so you can easily calculate how long it will take for paint to dry enough for the 2nd coat to go on. It can be used in the kitchen for testing meat, especially white meat and poultry / fowl as those have to be fully cooked through before being eaten, unlike red meats. It can be used for checking temperatures during wine making, making jam and for me I trust this gadget will be ideal for checking the water temperature before adding yeast, for baking. It should help produce better and more consistent breads as the water temperature is critical for reviving baking yeast and getting it to reactivate.I can't find anything negative about this gadget, at all, it even comes with a handy storage pouch. With it's current accuracy, the fact that it uses two AAA batteries that can be rechargeable and numerous uses for this thermometer, I do highly recommend this product as it is something that you may not use too often but it will last many years and be there for whenever you need it. It really is good value.

Useful gadget, for general use alongside kitchen’s
I got this to detect underfloor heating pipes and to see the floor temperature instead of buying £££ thermal imaging camera, this obviously is not what this was designed to do but it did the job so thumbs up for that.If you’re getting this for kitchen use, please be aware that this is not a waterproof device, which has been highlighted by another review already, but with it being a ‘non contact’ thermometer, I can’t see it being submerged or exposed to wet conditions, unless your own hands are wet, but I assume the device would be able to tolerate these kind of conditions.Whether you’re a Fahrenheit or a Celsius fan, choice is yours, and the device provides an accuracy of one tenth of a degree, you can also use it with or without the laser beam, although having the laser beam pointing at the exact location of the reading may enhance the accuracy for your purpose. It also comes with a fabric case for storage, but batteries are not supplied.Overall I believe it can be a useful gadget to have around, whether for its intended kitchen use or for general DIY, there are cheaper alternatives however so I’m not sure about value for money.
