Effective even if hanging down
I love my cat but she has always been extremely picky about where she wants to go to the bathroom. Over the years I've tried so many types of litter, litter boxes, litter attractants, litter box locations...so it was rough when she decided that underneath my desk was where she really wanted to be going. She ruined an area rug and would have ruined more, probably, until I got this device. She and my dog (and me for that matter) hate the noise it makes. I found that it was too sensitive, even on the low setting, when I placed it underneath the desk. Her cat tree isn't far and it would beep when she jumped off the tree. Instead, I strung it up under the desk so that it hangs there, not touching the ground. This way, vibrations on the floor don't set it off, but if she goes under the desk and bumps it, it will go off. I've had it for a while and she only had to set it off twice to learn not to go under there anymore! So while I do hate the idea of scaring an animal, in this case it was quick, effective, and pretty low impact in terms of stress to my pets.

May work better for certain applications
This is a review for both the Tattle Tale Sonic Pet Training Alarm and the Catscram Electronic Cat Repellent.I have a needy cat who HAS to be on the other side of any and all closed doors at all times. If she is inside, she wants out. If she is outside, she wants in. You may think this would be cute, until you're trying to sleep inside the room with the closed door. An open door is not an option because I can't have my eight year old walk in on her step father and I in the middle of the night either. This had been going on for almost a year. I felt my sanity slipping away from me due to lack of sleep. I would regularly pass out sitting up at my desk at work, and get caught in the act! I was on the verge of giving her away (which I hated to do, but I didn't know what else I could do). Then I came to Amazon with my problem, which I do for all my product needs.I had first bought the Tattle Tale Sonic Pet Training Alarm after reading reviews and comparing prices. It worked...very well. I attached it to my door with some command strips. Any time that she pawed at my door the alarm would sound and she would stop. The problem is that it has a very loud tone that is audible to humans and would wake me up. The up side is that she would not continue to paw at the door the rest of the night, so it was a good trade off...I would only be woken up once during the night. It has 2 settings, High and Low. I only used the Low setting which seemed to be very sensitive. I can see how this would be EXTREMELY helpful for dog owners who want to keep their pooch off the couch when they are away. I plan on trying it on my counter top on the High setting to see if it keeps my sister's counter surfing kitty off (update to come).I decided I wanted better. I have to say, I was very skeptical about the Catscram Electronic Cat Repellent at first. The reviews were ok but the price was nearly double what I paid for the Tattle Tale Sonic Pet Training Alarm. I decided to take the plunge anyways and I am so glad that I did! I followed the instructions when I first turning it on then set it up in front of my door frame facing across my door. I could tell it was working because my cat was sitting on my bed staring at it with her eyes dilated, which was a good sign. I set her outside my bedroom and closed the door. I went to sleep and woke up 6 hours later! Could it be?! Did I really just sleep 6 hours straight with no interruptions?! You have no idea how happy I was. Maybe there is hope for my sanity yet. The motion sensor on it is sensitive enough to sense movement in very dim lighting conditions so I can also put it inside my bedroom to keep her from trying to get out in the middle of the night and we can still get our cuddle time in.The manual for the Catscram Electronic Cat Repellent does mention that it may not work for white cats because their range of hearing is by nature very limited, and also older cats or some exotic breeds may not be affected by it. It works for my little calico though. So the verdict is: Both are good devices, but one may be better than the other depending on the application.

The only cat deterrent that actually works!
I have tried everything to keep my cats off things or to stop them from going in areas. This is the only thing that actually works! You can hang it or just place it somewhere and any movement will make the alarm go off. It only takes once and the cats won’t go back.

Sure Didn't Work for My Cats
I was very hopeful that this product would keep my two cats off our dining room table. Nothing has worked in the past -- neither sprays of water, nor aluminum foil, nor scolding them, nor citrus smells -- nothing. Here's what happened when I set up the Tattle Tale alarm. Cat 1 jumps on the table. The alarm (which lasts only 2 seconds and is relatively quiet -- my microwave beep is louder than this) sounded. Cat 1 is on guard at first, then curious. He walks over to it. The "alarm" remains silent, even though it's supposed to be sensitive to any and all movement. Cat 1 swipes at alarm. It sounds and stops. He swats again, and it sounds and stops again. Then, he walks around the table for a while while the alarm sits silently. Finally, he curls up for a nap on one of our placemats about 4 inches away from it. Cat number 2, intrigued by the sound, hops up on the table. The alarm sounds. She goes over to it. Although she's sniffing it, prancing around the table, and stretching, it doesn't sound again. So she curls up for a nap as well. And there I am, watching the "Tattle Tale" oversee the afternoon siesta of the two felines it was supposed to scare off.My guess is that it's not sensitive to most of the vibrations caused by cats' paws and that the 2-second, relatively soft sound of the alarm is not frightening enough to scare cats away. Even cats more skittish than mine, I imagine, could easily tolerate the benign beep eminating from this device.Don't waste your money. I burned $6 on shipping and now have to pay a 25% restocking fee. And the cats are still on the table.

Works as advertised
The Tattle Tale Sonic Pet Training Alarm works as advertised for me. It is slightly taller and longer than a pack of cigarettes/deck of cards. Has a switch with settings of off, low sound, and high sound. The low sound and high sound are not much different in terms of volume (both are loud enough to scare my dogs). It simply works as advertised: after placing it on a counter top, a couch, and a recliner, the slightest touch of the surrounding area activated the alarm. Without fail. My dogs now won't go jump on areas where they even see the device (actually rarely even turn it on now).I find it interesting when reviewers mark the alarm down solely because it does not work on their pet. That's not the product's fault. I can see a poor rating if it's not as advertised...such as the alarm is not loud, sensor does not work consistently, battery dies quickly, etc. In the end, your pet simply might not find an alarm sound to be a deterrent (like my dogs don't not find aluminum foil or bitter apple to be deterrent).
