Be My Lover

I love listening to music of my youth, when artist took their craft seriously and gave us all they had to give. I smile remembering the good times, and those I shared them with. My favorites on this album are, "You're Always on my Mind," and "Lady I Love You." His voice is so distinct, and simply soothing to me. "O'bryan should've been a much bigger artist, but the best things in life, often go by unnoticed. Good music will never die, it lives in our hearts and whispers in your ears forever.

ノースカロライナ出身の男性シンガー。人気TV番組『ソウルトレイン』に出演し，DJのドン・コーネリアスの後押しを受けて，アルバム・デビュー。一般的には，ヒット曲「The Gigolo」を含むデビュー作『Doin' Alright』の評判が高いようですが，『U.S. Black Disk Guide』では，ダンサーだけでなくバラードでの歌唱力を評価して，この3枚目をピックアップしています。　ダンサーとしての魅力を語るなら，モダンなシンセ・サウンドで小気味良くステップを踏む「Lovelite」，パーティー感覚でファンキーに盛り上がる「Breakin’ Together」ということになるんでしょうが，確かに「Go On And Cry」，「You’re Always On My Mind」，「Lady I Love You」という3曲のバラードでのヴォーカルは見事です。伸びやかで，表情豊か。ただ，残念ことに楽曲の方が今ひとつ乗り切れません。「Lady I Love You」は，穏やかでヘヴンリーなメロディーに心癒される佳曲なんですが，「Go On And Cry」は，AORファンが喜びそうなモダンなサウンドなのですが，ブリッジが今ひとつ。休日の昼下がりのようにのどかな「You’re Always On My Mind」も良い曲なのですが，メロディーが平凡で盛り上がりに欠けます。　むしろ，個人的には，レロマンティックなアップテンポ「Be My Lover」を推します。ホーンも交えたマイナー調のメロディーは，摩天楼の夜景が似合うお洒落な雰囲気。ダンディーなヴォーカルもカッコいいです。　というわけで，『ソウルトレイン』あがりだけど，ダンサーだけじゃないぞ，っていう，オブライアンの魅力を再発見できるアルバムです。
