Q: Stupid question here,So you roll the bar with one 45 on each side onto the wedge and then from that location, put the weight on and roll it back off?

If you want to put four plates on a side, you have a problem. The second, third and fourth plates are the same diameter as the first. This means that you have to pick up the bar with one hand and slide on the next plate with the other. Not hard for the second plate, but a pain for the third and fourth plates. The Dead Wedge solves that problem. You roll the first plate up on the wedge and then putting on or taking off the rest of the plates is a snap. If you are only putting on one plate on each side, this device will not help you.

Q: How is this better than old school rolling the inner plate over a five or 10 lb plate flat on its side?

All trolling thoughts aside... it's all about the angles. The wedge has a gradual incline so you can roll your bar and weights up without any issues. It'll then sit in the groove without movement so you can switch your plates or do whatever you want. If you have the few extra bucks then this is more of a convenience to you. But as you stated, the old school way does the same thing, but I imagine the incline isn't as smooth and you get some chance of the bar rolling from you as the flat plate on its side doesn't have a designed groove as this wedge does.

I ordered 2 and for me it was a waste of money. Its very lite and I have to walk to each side of the bar and bend over to lad weights anyway. The amount of work it adds when your loading heavy plates is so negligable as to be silly. Honestly for me the second one is just one more thing for me to kick out of my way before I start lifting. I do keep one on my platform in my garage and one in my gym bag so I did find a small use for the second one. But I deadlift in the commercial gym very seldom.
