Peterson Cast Iron Gas Log Lighter - 14 Inch - for Natural Gas Only

This log lighter is very sturdy. I don't expect it to rot out like the cheap 3/8 inch iron pipe log lighter that rotted out on me and I replaced with this one. I've been using this new one for 4 months now and it still looks and works like new. It has half inch female openings on each end. One end is sealed off with a screw in plug that could be removed and installed into the other end. To use on the left or on the right. I actually removed fittings from my old rotted log lighter and screwed them onto this new unit. I did go to Home Depot or Lowes to buy some adapter fittings, (I bought brass fittings) to use my old 3/8 inch fittings on this 1/2 inch unit. I really like this unit. I expect that it will last a long time. Looks like it's made of cast iron, not a cheap piece of plumbing pipe like other log lighters that rot away from heat.

Works great. I like the flat top so that when the ashes get deep, I can slide my little ash shovel across the top and clear a path for the gas to burn. Nice and heavy cast iron with nice casting and finish. Fittings went right in without issue. It has a lip over the burner holes to keep the ashes out. Makes starting a fire easy as can be. Light match or long lighter, hold next to burner, turn on gas, and poof, you have fire. Make sure to turn it off when you are done. I would buy it again, but currently only have one fireplace and this will last a life time and then some.

Only issue I had with this is that it didn’t regulate the gas as well as the one I replace. It is thick and looks well built. However it don’t come with a regulator or air mixture to help regulate the amount of propels the used. For this I give it 4 stars rather then 5. If they can redesign to allow for better control of this I would give it 5 stars for sure. Overall it did what I wanted and was easy to install.

Easy to install and does a beautiful job

I've been going through the standard pipe gas log lighters that you get from the big box stores every couple of years. Despite trying to rotate the pipe so ash doesn't fall directly into the gas chamber holes, they still collect debris and end up closing. After a couple of years, you're generally missing two or three outlet holes so the fire doesn't start evenly. This is a heavy duty cast iron starter that has built in protection, a lip that hangs over the outlets, protecting them from debris. I like that it has heavy duty feet to support the weight so I don't feel like there will be a bend that can create problems down the road. My only real knock is that I wish it was a little longer. I looked for a longer model but couldn't find one, although that doesn't mean they don't exist. 18" would be perfect for my fireplace. Overall, great buy and I think this one should last decades rather than years.
