A nice reminder but remains at surface level and lacks sciemtific rigor
i enjoyed reading this book, but it really is not more than a starting point for readers with little or no experience studying (which by the way is something different from learning). But for those the book lacks detailed explanations - eg the method of loci is a fantastic tool but the expllnntiom given was just too weak for anyone that doesn't know it already. Many words are spent on vague and common-sensical advice. But most of all I'm bothered by many spurious and unfounded claims the author throws out as fact. Some parts of the book are well sourced, but others had no sources beyond a youtube video or listicles found online. Presentation and tyle nice and friendly, but the lack of depth both in explanations and in parricular the lack of backing for questionable claims is really disappointing.Sadly also a lot of words are spent on an overselling introduction and 15 pages of pitches to his other books at the end.I dont regret buying this as reading it was a nice reminder of things I've read before - but on its own I don't think it adds much value to the many books out there. I'm left with the impression that the author invested some time in this - but he's really not an expert on the covered topics.

Great book to do fast learning for tests
The book should be rated as 5 stars by a college (or even high school) student, but learning is far more than memorization and much of the text focuses on -- and does a very good job of -- explaining how to memorize and recall content for tests. If you want to learn to play the piano, or how to play golf there are definitely good sections to read but the type of learning that is required for many skills is not based heavily on recalling facts. The section on language learning is tilted strongly toward academic learning and while that is a component of language learning, if that is all that is used you will know lots of words and grammar but have no clue as to how to converse with a native speaker (that is personal experence talking!). It is well written and understandable and enjoyable to read. His use of bold font to bring key concepts to the fore is very good though some of the sections (think Mind Maps) would have benefited a lot from some illustrations.Great for college students or someone facing a complex professional exam. Highly recommended for that audience.

A very informative, and well-researched read.
The author has done enough research to write this book and the research is very well rounded from various aspects, from memorisation to learning language, preparing for exams etc. the book is backed by scientific research and studies, so supports the material contained therein. Overall a good read.

Great Methods for Accelerated Learning
I am Career Services Manager at a private for profit vocational school, this should be mandatory reading and use for both students and instructors. Why? Because that is the business we are in!

Well worth the price.
Excellent book. I have used some of the techniques before and they do work. There are also techniques I have not used before and will try it in going forward. Ian brings the message across in an easy understandable language.

Lives up to its title!
Most of the books I've read on improving memory are written by experts in memory contests, and aspire to teach you tricks like memorising a deck of cards or a sequence of numbers. This book stands out by addressing real world problems like studying for exams and learning languages. I was already putting the author's advice to work while reading it, and am getting immediate results, in particular with flash cards. An intelligent and perceptive book - I can't recommend it highly enough!

Extremely Helpful
I an studying at the moment and found amazing techniques to help me in my current assessments. I have always focused on subject I was studying and have never thought about learning skills and techniques. The Chapter on remembering names was a must for me as I have many embarrassing and awkward situations in work and socially, I have been practising techniques and slowly getting better. Things and me can only get better after reading this book.
