Quite effective, but could be a little better.
I've used this style of trap for 3 years now in a concerted effort to greatly reduce the overpopulation of mice and chipmunks on my property (the red-tailed hawks and great horned owls cannot keep up). In that time, I have trapped 275 rodents using these types of traps. My use is 100% outdoor. The "mean kills before failure" is just shy of 12 rodents per trap. However, this includes traps that mysteriously disappeared overnight, likely because a carnivore decided to take-out rather than dine-in on the trap's contents. If you take the time to anchor the trap to avoid this problem, you can increase the trap's value. There are two typical failures: 1) the clip that holds the top of the trap in the "armed" position breaks and 2) the base around the bait cup breaks, no longer retaining the bait cup. I've had traps last for over a year eliminating many rodents while others broke after one or two trips; there does seem to be variation in quality from unit to unit.Overall, from a value perspective, these are effective traps and in my view, are worth the money. They won't last forever but most will do a good job within a reasonable lifetime and they are much preferred over a chemical solution.UPDATE: 11/18/2020: I've upgraded this to 5 stars as I've had extraordinary success using this particular trap from this seller. The "mean kills before failure" has gone up quite a bit - these seem to be much more resilient than the same style from other sellers. I don't know what's different but these are like the Energizer Bunny - just keep going and going... I haven't had one break yet.

Exactly the kind we wanted but 1/2in too big
These traps were nice. We had bought something like this from our farm supply store. It was to put into the Protecta Rodent bait station. This type works really well and within 1-2 days, no miss. So I ordered these. Great product but was 1/2 in too big for the large rodent bait stations. I had to return and get the slightly smaller ones. It would have been nice if the smaller ones were offered also.I would still recommend these if someone wanted to use these standalone. They would definitely work and are reusable. The ones I have are so useful. It works better than just using the bait, which takes so long to work, if at all. The bait alone was getting over daily but not sure how long it would take....

I like them better
Far better than old school ones and safer for the human

Saw RAT on web cam escape fully enter trap, eating bacon bait, but STILL escaped when trap sprung
Multipule trys. All FAILED. Set up web cam to document. 1st try was peanut btr as bait, but Rat only sniffed the trap and walked away. I learned that Rat will smell human scent and will avoid. Then I bought bacon, put on plastic gloves and rubbed down the unit with bacon and baited it with uncooked bacon. RAT JUST REACHED in and ate the bacon for a few nights. The first night i left huge pieces of Bacon so he would learn it was Good, then i cut tiny pieces so he had to work harder to get it. FINALLY ABOUT THE 4TH NIGHT, the Rat completely reached accross the trap. Trap was FINALLY tripped, but Rat escaped. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THESE! I have rqsted refund, but still propmpted that i need to return an obvious BAD product.

I was skeptical, but in less than 12 hrs of setting up it proved it self.
The rat I had was fairly large. It had managed to escape from the sticky traps set out by our pest control company a few days prior. I saw this trap and was skeptical of the design but figured I'd try it. After one night of usage I can say I will use these again and would recommend to others. This trap was very easy to bait and setup. The evening I got them I set them up (using peanut butter as bait) and within 12 hrs I had my first victim. The death was not "instant" but within about 5 minutes it was dead. The rat was large enough to fling the trap around and try to pry itself out, which was VERY noisy. Much to my surprise it was unable to escape and it died within a few minutes. I did feel sorry for it, but it did chew through the air conditioning duct work under the house, invade my home, and terrorize my family.Cleanup was easy, just pinch the ends of the trap (like a clothes pin), drop dead rat in trash, throw away, rinse, and reset. No need to touch the rat. No blood/guts/gore.The traps are fairly large, so they don't fit well under kitchen counters or small areas without some clearance. They do need strategic placement, however I can say that these traps do work even for larger rodents.

Not a Success
The only rodent that got killed was a mouse; otherwise, I did trap 4 rats and 1 other mouse that were caught at the hind end so were still alive. I had to drop them in a bucket of water and drown. Several times, I found the traps had been released but nothing was trapped. I don't know what the problem is. Maybe I have super rats. I'm going to try some of the old-fashioned traps and see how that turns out.

I killed a rat!
I did not realize we had rats in the area until a couple of oranges each week were on the ground around the tree with about 1/3 of the orange peal gone and all the meat of the orange was hollowed out. I was told this is how rats eat oranges. I bought the traps and set them out every evening, but brought them back inside during daylight hours so I would not injure other animals. After about 4 nights I was successful. One dead rat. I hope that is the end of them, but I will continue to set the traps for another week or so, until I no longer have any eaten out oranges on the ground. To begin with, I set the traps right by the orange tree but was not successful. Later, I just set them around the outside of the house -- that is where I got the one rat. Trap is easy to use.

Rat trap
I had rats in my chicken coop so I got these. They work great except once the other rats see what happens they won`t touch them again, the same with ant trap, never forget rars are very smart so you have to be creative.
